Please help! my beautiful, healthy, 8 month old red sex link hasn't laid an egg in 3 days and is not eating. Her poops are tiny, very dark (a little white) and stringy and are sticking to her feathers. We live in New Orleans, so it's been hot but, other 3 chickens are fine. I've tried the olive oil thing to no avail. She ate a few bites of fish and a few corn kernels but only directly from my hand. I've washed her "vent" area?? a few times to keep it clean. There are tiny little black dots that look like places where feathers have come off. She is not quite as lethargic today, walking around yard and pecking as she goes. Can anyone suggest something for me to help her?

Put her into a warm bath. While she is soaking in the warm water, rub her abdomen downwards to try and move the egg along. Can you feel an egg? It would feel like a big lump. Keep her in the water for about 20 minutes. Dry her well with a towel and hairdryer. See if she passes the egg on her own. If not, using gloves, use some olive oil and spread it around the inside of her vent, this will help move things.

If you can't feel the lump, the heat may be the culprit even though the other chickens are fine.

Thanks. I cannot feel any lumps...have her in water but waiting on vet specialist to return my call. The first vet I spoke to said after 3 days it was unlikely that I could take care of it myself. UHGGG!!!

Are you sure there's an egg stuck? So many folks have posted lately about egg bound hens that really weren't at all. Is she standing upright like a penguin? If not, probably isn't egg bound. She is a sex link, and though young, they often have reproductive issues, but it's only been 3 days. That isn't long in this heat.
