We are a single house residents of City of Redmond. Based on the zone map, we think that we are allowed to raise chicken for no more than 7. The main reason that we raised backyard chicken is to provide therapy support for our autistic child. Prior to raising chicken, we tried dog, cat, but he showed no interest until we introduced chickens! He was happy, engaged!

It is a pity that our neighbor complained to the HOA who sent us a letter indicating that we need to remove all 5 live chickens and all related habitation within 30 days!

We were upset since chickens are for therapy purpose. Secondly, we abide by Redmond city municipal code. Dose HOA have any authority to force us to remove our chickens if city does allow!

Any advice will be appreciated.

HOAs are different based on the states they are in. Your best bet is to contact a lawyer. They'll be able to give you better guidance. Hopefully someone here has experience with HOAs and can give you better advice.

It may be awkward but have you and your son gone to the neighbor and explain the purpose of your chickens? Does the neighbor know how special these girls are? It would have to be quite the hard hearted jerk to deny a special needs child...

If you live near a law school, many will allow seniors to do pro bono work, overseen by a law school prof. Get your child's Dr. to say in writing that these are therapy chickens and find out how to register them as such. Good luck We are pulling for you.
