I agree, the toenails will tear her skin pretty badly. I also blunt the toenails with the dremel when we do the spurs.

Isolate her from the rooster until she heals, or he will only rip the wound open. I hope you have more than three hens for the rooster. He needs to spread his lovin around a little bit. I also believe that his toenails may have caused as much damage as his spurs. Check your other hens to make sure that they are not injured also.

i just file them down with a nail file every few months. it's blood-free and effective. also, it might not have been your rooster that did that. a predator could have gotton in, too. if you cut off your roosters spurs, how will he defend his flock?

Maybe the rooster did the first cut you noticed and the chickens, as a group, did the damage she now has.
