Help!
I have an injured hen. She jumped the fence and the neighbor's dog got her. She's got four slash wounds near the back of her rib cage. The one farthest back is the deepest. No lung punctures that I can tell, and she's doing ok, not in shock or anything.

The problem is that I am leaving for Haiti in 3 hours to work in a clinic and my husband will be caring for the birds while I'm gone, so I'm limited to what I have on hand. Here's what I have to treat her with:

Tylan Injectible
Tylan powder for the water
Gauze pads and bandaging supplies
Triple antibiotic ointment

I am planning on injecting her with the Tylan and putting her on a water course for the time I'm gone (hubby doesn't do shots).
Can I clean the wound with Tylan? The only other thing I have on hand to clean the wound with is peroxide.
After the wound is clean, I will pack it with triple antibiotic, bandage the wound, and put her in an isolated coop.

Any other ideas?
What dosage should I give on Tylan for a single injection for a wound?
Thanks for any and all help I can get in the next 2 hours or so...

I had a hen who had all the skin and feathers removed from the top of her head to her shoulders - I could see muscle and bone.

She healed on her own. I cleaned it with a sterile saline solution (1qt of water + 1/4tsp salt - boiled and cooled) and rubbed it with neosporin. I didn't bandage it. I chose not to treat with antibiotics unless it got infected and it never did - it developed a very thick scab and I left it alone. The scab eventually got smaller and smaller as the skin and feathers grew back and she was fully healed with a small bald spot (skin but no feathers) on the back of her head. It was amazing to see how little it seemed to bother her! I did isolate her in a dog crate, but I kept her in the coop so she could see her buddies and they wouldn't forget her.

Hope that helps and I hope she heals quickly!

Ok I just remembered I also have Polyotic Tetracycline powder for the drinking water.
Which is better to use for this in the water, Tylan or Tetracycline? I am thinking the Tetracycline would be better for a wound.
Anybody? I have about an hour before I have to leave for the airport-

I cleaned the wounds with peroxide, packed them with triple antibiotic, covered with gauze and vetrap, and injected with Tylan.

I need an opinion on whether to put her on the Tylan or Tetracycline in her water. Which one gives her a better shot?.....help please!

Found this thread with info from threehorses, recommends Pen-G, doesn't mention those two.

She says systemic antibiotics may not be necessary, perhaps your husband could pick up the Pen-G later...
Excellent info there on woundcare--maybe you could print it out for your husband, and be sure he can log onto here! Go and don't worry too much!

If it isn't a puncture wound you don't necessarily need the course of antibiotics. I would leave your husband with her as she is, keep her in a dark and quiet room. If she doesn't seem to be improving then he should do a course of antibiotics. Leave him with a link to this post so that he can ask for help then. We promise that we will walk him through it.

PS. Bless you and those you are going to help.

Thank you all so much for your help!
It is a puncture wound, I think- the back would is about an inch deep and only about 1/2 inch wide. I think it goes deeper than I initially realized.

I think that if no structures were hit (organs, intestines, etc), she has a fighting chance.
I will give him the link and tell him to ask for help if he needs it.
Again, thank you all so much for your advice and encouragement!
Off to Haiti... I'll try not to worry about my baby too much!
