URGENT: Mites or Lice on Already Near-Dead Hen- How to Remove?

Quote:
They are eating you just are not seeing it. I thought the same thing of my broody hens, until I seen them off the nest. They just are not eating as often as the others.

I don't know what they were eating other than some leftover seeds that might be in the run- the layer crumbles in their feeder is at the same level as it was several days ago. They did eat a little more of Glenda's probiotic mash today. One of them wouldn't leave the nest but ate what I offered her from the bowl; the other one ate a little then went out in the run to nibble a little of the mash on a plate and drink a little water before returning to the nest. They aren't laying, just fluffed up acting broody. I may go to Duramyciin in the water; I'd worm but the wazine bottle says DO NOT use on birds that are ill, etc. Maybe cayenne peeper in the probiotic mash?

I have a blind-in-one-eye Sumatra hen. I noticed her closing her eye, and I saw it was wounded, oozing tissue from the wound. It looked bad, so I thought I should cull her. However, I decided against it, and I nursed her back to health. I soaked her eye in contact solution thrice a day. She wouldn't eat chicken feed, so I just fed her eggs. It took two or three weeks, but now she is with the rest of the flock, although her eye is blind.

Well, my boy is hanging in there, I just cannot catch him to do anything about his eye. It is now to far a long to try and treat and he is beginning to smell pretty bad. I think I am going to have the guy next door releive him of his suffering sooner than later. His eye was so swollen when I noticed it, it looked like a balloon on the side of his head.

I think it is to far a long. It has been months since I noticed it. I have tried to clear it up once already and as soon as I thought it was fine, it reinfected.

So sorry about the roo… I hope you can get that resolved quickly(it would be a relief if your neighbor is experienced and willing, and the bird is past saving). I didn't like having to put down the buff hen last week, but she was fading and in pain. The original BO I was treating had huge swelling on her face once she went back to the flock and I began treating the one in this thread; I don't think it was the eye per say, but the area around it. BUT as for the ones now acting ill, they did respond a little to that probiotic mash that Glenda H. had on another thread- even came out of the hen house for a little while and laid one little egg. I've asked her to put that recipe on a sticky for all to use when she can. If you need it, I can repost it here.
BTW- to cover all my bases with sick hens, I checked very carefully when looking for parasites… lice got by me for a little bit before I nailed them, and I even found a couple on my hens I thought were lice-free (they've all since been dusted).

I know that this is an old post, but, I'm a newby to BYC and wonder if possibly the sick hen that started out with lice (which I was reading about) ha a stroke? Hens, according to what I've read are naturally hypertensive. I'd appreciate any input to this idea, what you all think,if anyone reads this.
Thanks
