URGENT!!! My 11 week old peachick ate a paper clip!

IMO pushing stuff threw works better with fiber.. at the very least use a different kind of oil cause mineral oil is pretty bad stuff if ya think about what it is made of and what it does to a body.
Guess my momma didn't know better but like the peafowl I got good at hiding sickness for fear of that stuff.

Mineral Oil. It robs the body of nutrients. It destroys the nutrients. It is a lipid solvent that absorbs many substances and interferes with normal absorption of nutrients-vitamin A,D,E,K, Beta Carotene, Calcium phosphorus, potassium.

yes I have and if you want to get something moved out of the intestines that is the best way to try and achieve it without surgery.
Probiotics will help re establish the flora afterwards.

I have also used mineral oil on myself, birds, cats and horses, it is the proper oil to use when trying to lubricate the intestinal tract, IMO.

Note that one should be very careful when giving oil orally to any bird, animal or person as aspiration can occur and cause lipoid pneumonia, which would be very bad.

Well feel free to correct me, but the food first goes into the gizzard and is ground up ( I believe there is a name for this process in birds other than ground up ) and will take a while to get into the rest of the system so I don't think the intestines need any cleaning out yet. If it grinds up it will never be seen again, just like the grit and seeds and rocks and stuff. George

I meant to say the digestive tract vs the intestines , sorry...did not see where I could edit that post .
In any event, I use mineral oil if ever a problem of a foreign item/impaction is suspect and only on a one time basis per bird.
If it passes something foreign then fine, if not then it's a " will see what happens" type thing.
Been doing this on the advice of not one but 2 highly respected avian veterinarians and never had any detrimental results in the birds from doing so.
I would be more hesitant to use cod liver oil than mineral oil simply because it's high in Vitamins D3 and A which are fat soluble vitamins and can be toxic if given to much.
The other vitamins mentioned that can be depleted by mineral oil can also be replenished fairly quickly and easily, should it be an issue .
I'm not here to argue with anyone, it's what I've been told is best to do, I do it and it works for my birds.

very good point, must get past the trachea and down IN the throat for certain with oils or any other liquid etc. when dosing orally.

He is fine, he fly's in making his god awful sound to announce his presents, then goes off into the woods to eat stuff in the water from the rains with the ducks.
