I have a chicken that was attacked by a dog about one hour ago. I found her in the backyard with AT LEAST two open wounds. She is walking and talking, but she is struggling.

WOUNDS:
- There is a large gaping wound in the back of her neck, about half the length of her neck's circumference. Her spine or muscle is visible.
- She is missing a lot of the feathers on her back leaving a raw, agitated wound about the size of a baseball.

All vets are closed for the night and no emergency place will see a chicken. What can I do for her until tomorrow?

I will post photos if needed. All advise is extremely appreciated!!

Photos will be needed. I know that treating for shock is step one. Get her in a quiet place, dim lights, wash the wounds with saline solution and feed her some sugar water with electrolytes. Gatorade works in a pinch.

I am uploading the photos now. She is in a cat carrier in our bathroom with the lights off. I am unsure how to clean her neck wound. Hopefully, the photos will help.

I agree with BlindLemonChicken. Make her as comfortable as you can to start with. Then look at the wound. Styptic powder will help stop any bleeding. If you don't have any, you can use baking flour. Wrap the wound with gauze. Hope she'll be okay!

Make a saline solution as BlindLemon said. (Pour 1000 mL (4 cups) of warm water • Add 2 teaspoons of table salt into your container. Measure exact amount of salt to make sure it is correct. Mix until salt is completely dissolved.) Gently use a towel with the solution to clean the wound.

I used styptic powder for my duck (dog bite), I always have some on hand. Then cleaned and sprayed with vetericin. Much smaller wound though, two punctures.

I mixed 2 teaspoons of table salt into 4 cups of warm water and dabbed her wounds with a clean towel. I am going to spray Vetericin later tonight. Is there anything else I should do? It looks like her neck wound goes straight down to her muscle. Thank you for helping Cheesecake, I am so worried for her.
