We just got home and noticed our male's butt was red. We took a closer look and has what we think it is prolapse. He was our first ever button and we really love him. We gave him a warm bath and have been trying to push it back in. The stuff that pooped out Is HUGE! It is almost as if his vent is too tiny for it to go back in. We love him so dearly and wouldn't want to lose him. We keep trying to push it in and it looks like the things are going to pop and that would be bad! Plese help!

Hi, sorry you are having this problem. Can you do a search on this site for "vent prolapse" or prolapsed vent" or even just "prolapse" and see if you can find anything useful that way? Where are you located in the world, roughly? It is nearly 1:30 am here in the USA, or at least in the middle of it, and the best people I know to ask for help are likely asleep.

thank you but we think it is in but easily pops out its 11:30 here. We just don't know what to do.

I will flag some to see if they can help you in the morning.
@Eggcessive, @Wyorp Rock, @azygous.

I do know you don't want any of his inner tissues to dry out. So smear them good with antibiotic ointment with NO pain-killer in it. Neosporin or something like that. If you don't have any, petroleum jelly will do. If you don't have that, honey will do.

Gently re-insert the tissues back into his vent and hold it there as long as you can. Several minutes at least. There is a chance it may stay.

Put him in a dog crate or something like that and keep him in a safe place away from the other chickens, and where flies cannot get to him.

That's all I can think of for tonight. Good luck!

Oh, I just remembered. I think you can use Prep H if you have any. I believe it helps with the swelling and inflammation.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help. I can assure you he probably won't die before morning, so just try to keep him warm and comfy, and try not to stress too much. Hopefully one of our more experienced experts will come on and give you more guidance in the morning.

Other products you may have on hand, to use in an emergency if you dont have the others already listed above: coconut oil, vegetable oil, ky jelly. Anything like that, just to keep the tissue from drying out. It may be too swollen, to stay inside right now, when you push it back in. You're doing good, just keep him isolated and calm until someone with more expertise can help you. Be sure to post pictures, that will help then to better help you more quickly. Epsom salt in lukewarm water, to soak his bum in, will also help with the swelling. Then gently wrap him in a towel and hold him until he is dry, do not rub him dry. :) 👍

Oh and, after using Epsom salt soak, rinse with water before drying him off. You don't want the salt to dry on him and make things worse.
