URGENT!!!! Red Star hen with large, red crop, foamy vent, etc... Help!

I read on another thread that when you use Wazine, you can't eat the eggs for 14 days AFTER you feed it to the hens. Is this true? If so, we would have to throw out all of the eggs. We give eggs to our neighbors and we eat them. So we wouldn't be able to eat any of them for 14 days?

Thanks

What a nightmarish thought, huh?

Yes, the heat would kill the eggs. It's unlikely they'd get worms from it. It would just be offputting.

We'll look for Penny's update some time later.

You can just feed the DE if they're not in the same area of ground and don't cross over. But of course I"d have to say that it's easier and more effective to worm a whole flock at once. It's been said, but it's your flock and you could do either if they don't cross grounds. Still consider a worming program.

No the feed-grade DE (It was feed grade, right? not pool or garden grade) shouldn't hurt the healthy birds if they're not wormy and if you're feeding less than 2% (in weight, not bulk) of their daily diet including that which they might pick up outside.

Thanks!
Yes the DE is food grade.

We are pretty sure that one flock doesn't have worms, but what if they do? Should we just treat everyone with the Wazine, or would that harm the ones who don't have worms?

This may or may not be related to the worms, but I also have another question:

One of our Red Star hens, Linda, was limping last week for a few days. On the leg she was limping on, the spur had gotten much larger than the one on her left leg(the leg that she wasn't limping on). Usually, all of our hen's spurs are just tiny bumps, but hers reminded me of when a rooster's spurs just barely start growing. It was just strange that the larger spur happened to be on the leg she was limping on.
We checked her over for injuries and couldn't find any. She was eating and drinking and following the other chickens around like normal.
Any thoughts?

(P.S. the closest TSC is about an hour away from my dad's house. It's not very far from here so maybe I could pick some Wazine up but we wouldn't be able to give it to him and the chickens until we went there this Friday. Also, there's a local Feeds 'n' Needs place nearby. Maybe they will have some Wazine?)

Any raised scales on her leg, or is it possible that the spur actually is a little swelling under the scales making it look larger?

(Mentally trying to rule out scaley mites)

Nope we've dealt with scaley leg mites before...it's not scaley leg mites. No redness or swelling, etc. that I can see. The spur just got longer.

Hi everyone!

We got Wazine-17 from TSC last week and this is the...7th or 8th day(gotta check my calendar) of giving it to them. We figured how much to give to each flock. After reading how much to give, we did a little math and figured that since we have 2 separate flocks, each with 1 waterer(about 1 gallon each), so we mixed 4ml of Wazine-17 in each 1 gallon waterer.

How long are we suppose to be giving it to them? We've had to refill one of the gallon waterers once, and did the same measurements above^^^. After using the Wazine a couple times, we noticed a live worm in one of the hen's droppings, so we moved the waterer outside during the day. All of our chickens free range, and it's been really wet around here lately, so while they are free ranging I guess they drink out of puddles instead of going back to the coop to drink out of the waterer. We leave the doors open so they can get back in for food and water and to go to bed.
So hopefully now that we have both waterers outside during the day when they are free ranging plus we have a light in one of their coops at night so they can eat/drink at night, they will be getting enough of the Wazine-17 to kill the worms.

After we are done giving the Wazine-17 to them, how often after that do we give it to them? Every year? Can we give the DE once and a while as a preventive purpose along with the Wazine?

Thanks!

We haven't seen any blood in any of the chicken's droppings anymore.

Wait, why 7 days of wazine? It's a one day treatment. And incidentally, you might try refilling the waterers more often. Leaving them causes biofilm inside which, although not visable, can cause disease.

I'm sure they're good and wormed now. /wink

You could technically do that every 2 months, but you'd only kill one type of worm. So follow up with a wet mash with fenbendazole sheep SafeGuard liquid 10% wormer. I can give you the recipe for that in 6 weeks or so. Wazine paralyzes and expels live round worm adults, and fenbendazole takes care of most of the rest including larvae so that they don't change into adults. Both have a good shelf life.

Save the wazine then for birds that fit any of the following conditions:
- The bird is thin or had diarrhea and you're going to worm it
- The bird or flock sheds any worms
- The bird is under four weeks of age (only use wazine unless otherwise directed).
- The bird has an unknown worming history - like new birds
- The bird has either a) not been wormed with a broad spectrum wormer in over 6 months, or it's been 2 months since your last Wazine treatment. If you did Broadspectrum, disregard b.

I'm glad to hear there's no more blood. Since you saw a worm, that's at least one adult roundworm that was paralyzed and expelled - no ova from her! Good job.

And also good on putting water outside - birds should always have water where they spend a lot of their time.

Ohh I thought they were suppose to drink the Wazine-17 in their water for a certain amount of days...?
So we should fill up their water and add Wazine-17 and let them drink it for 1 day, then dump it all out the next day and refill with normal water?

And what is fenbendazole? Where can we get it?

______________
So basically, we:

1. Put Wazine-17 in water for 1 day, then dump it all out ad refill with normal water

2. 6 weeks later, give fenbendazole wet mash stuff to them for...(how long???)

3. follow up with worming, using Wazine-17 and fenbendazole wet mash stuff, every 2 years
_____________
Is this correct?
Thanks!
