Yesterday I noticed a black circular spot on my Pita Pinta’s back. She is 6.5 months old and lays an egg almost everyday. She’s never slept on the roost like the other chickens. I attached a picture below. I think it’s an infected wound with mites. I think I should dip all my hens and treat them for mites. What do you think?

Do you have a rooster who may have pecked her or pulled feathers? Can you see any moving mites or lice on her skin?
Sorry, I just saw the post about possible maggots. Do you see any maggots in the wound?

How is she doing? Any updates?

She’s staying stable. I dipped her in
Permethrin about 4 weeks ago and just again today. All of the chickens but her sleep on a roost and she lays her eggs under the coop. I unfortunately think I should sell her before the winter. This make it easier for me and make more room for the other chickens.

Does she still have that wound?

I think somebody already asked, but did you specifically check that spot for maggots?

She may need to get out to dust bathe to keep herself cleaner. You can wash off the poop from her vent, and trim away any extra fluff that is getting stuck. Good to hear that she is growing feathers. Is she separated or are you going to try slowly to reintegrate her back into the flock?

I have and didn’t see any. If she had some I treated her with a Permethrin dip which I think would kill maggots. Any other thoughts or suggestions?
