Our 7month old australorp hen is bleeding from her vent/rectum. I'll post a pic in a few minutes. To describe it, I'd say it looks like the consistency of egg white but is bright red "trail" and dripped down her feathers. She is our pet and we see and hold her daily. She seemed to be find today, scratching in the dirt and leaves, eating and drinking. She jumped up to her roosting bar and seems to be moving fine.
Is there anything I can do?!?! We would take her to the vet but there aren't any in our area on duty right now and possibly not tommorrow either (vet called in sick today) We wouldn't spend thuosands of dollars on her, but she is my daughter's beloved pet and I'd like to do something!

edit: She has been laying eggs regularly.

OMG I’m so sorry! I don’t know what’s going on but someone will answer who has medical knowledge. my chickens have inky ever had a broken leg 😞 I’ll be praying for her tho!

She may have suffered a prolapsed vent, and the other hens have been pecking her vent, injuring it. I would separate her inside a dog crate or bring her in. Clean her up with some water or soak her in a soapy shallow bath. Apply petroleum jelly or oil to her vent to keep it from drying out. Honey works well to help reduce swelling. This may take some time for her vent to heal, and I would repeat the soaks daily. Epsom salts warm water can help heal them. But don’t let the prolapse tissue dry out. The prolapse can be pushed back inside, although it may come back out.

Thank you so much! I cleaned her up and gave her an epsom salt/warm water soak. Then applied patroleum jelly. We brought her inside, in a dog crate with a blanket over it. She seems content, preening and talking softly to us. I am optimistic! Thank you for your advice! I really had no idea what to do!

She is doing much better! I'm heading to bed and just checked on her. Looks like it went back in. She pooped and both her rear and the poop look fine. How long do you think we should keep her inside? We'll be watching to see if she lays and egg in the morning (her usual routine) and how things look after.

You can keep her separated inside a dog crate with her own food and water once you place her back in the coop. I like to get them back with the flock as soon as I can, but a wire dog crate can keep them safe. They usually prefer being with their flock, but she may need to stay in for more care. Watch carefully that the prolapse has not recurred when reintegrating her. Watch for any vent pecking or bullying.

Update:
In the past 24 hrs, We have kept Meg in a small dog crate, covered and with food and water. She is eating, drinking and pooping. She hasn't laid an egg and her abdomen feels empty. We've given her some epsom salt soaks and I used vasaline to lubricate the area.

It is better after all that and "goes back in" most of the way, but not all the way. It is still bleeding, but only slightly. I'm wondering if it will continue to get better. I sure hope so! Tonight, when we had her out, she pooped and it was a difficult process. But the poop looked normal and her vent seemed to go back in a bit more. We'll see what the morning brings.
