URGENT!

Middle of the night and my baby chicken cant breath! All I have as an antibiotic is Amoxicillin and sulfameth/trimethoprim, I already gave her some vinager and vegetable oil in case something was stuck and messaged her throat and crop. Can she take these antibiotics? I already did research and read it could be many things like gapeworm, respiritory infection, mites etc. Antibiotics can cure these rite? I read about the amoxicillin and one of its treatments was respiritory infections.

Okay...first....do not give antibiotics when you have no idea what you are treating...some work for some thinks and others work for other things.

How old is the chick?
What are the other symptoms?
Is it eating and drinking? Was it before this started?
What is the temperature in the brooder?


Please do not give the chick vinegar or oil or anything until you have a clue what is wrong. Also do not give chickens white or distilled vinegar under any circumstances....apple cider vinegar only is to mixed in their water and not fed directly to them.

Bear in mind that young chicks can die for no reason aside from failing to thrive...especially in the first week - two weeks of their life.

Read the sticky at the beginning of this forum, answer the questions from the sticky and then we may be able to help.

Is your chick gasping for air? If so, it could be a respiratory infection. Poly vi sol vitamins without iron and probios work well!

You chick will need a probiotic like probios if your treating with antibiotics, but I agree with the above poster. Don't treat with antibiotics unless your sure they have a respiratory infection. If it is one, I gave vitamins down the beak twice a day to those gasping. I also treated my whole flock. They had brooder pnemounia from knocking down the waterer last year. They all lived, but I guess they all are carriers now. Good luck!

DO NOT give vinegar to any chicken straight! Where on earth did you get that piece of advice?

Giving the chick straight vinegar would kill it eventually than the cider vinegar/water solution. I have NO idea where you got that information to give the chick straight vinegar and veg oil?

She passed away this morning, still gasping for air. I didn't know what to do, giving her something than nothing at all in an emergency I would take that chance on saving her life than doing nothing at all and letting her choke. There wasnt any bleeding or injury other than her breathing heavily and trying to breath. She has been eating chicken starter and drinking just water, shes only 1 weak old. Poop looked normal. Shes been using shavings as bedding. I was looking on the internet frantic trying to find something just anything to help her and all I had was amoxicillin and I reed it does treat respiritory problems,The veg oil and vinegar was me in a frantic not knowing what to do trying to get her passage open. It seamed to work for a little bit, she was jumping and almost passed out and I gave her it and she started breathing a little better. I wish I could have given her better treatment but it was all I had and I couldnt get straight answers in time. Im checking the other ones rite now and I found one that is breathing heavily with a clicking sound, could this be mites? I checked under her wings and don't see anything weird like little bugs or crawling. Im going to keep a close eye on all of them, mite have to take a trip to the feed bin.

make sure the shavings for the bedding IS NOT made from cedar. It should be plain pine shavings.

Rhode island reds

Breathing heavily & clicking sounds.
The other one that just died had the same symptoms but it was opening and closing its mouth gasping for air.

The one that just died was 1 day, the others is hard to tell but im just recently noticing so 1 day also.



4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?

yes somewhat, not opening and closing mouths gasping for air but is breathing heavily and making clicking sounds when breathing.

No

Nothing I know of.

Chicken starter and water.
