URGENT

Hello, my female quail has a large read glob hanging out of her vent, I think it is a hernia. We saw it when we were holding her on her back to save her toe which has been injured, but it might have been there before. Does she have egg binding, a hernia, or what? What action should I take? It is not bleeding externally, but I cannot be sure about internally.

UPDATE: It seems like the large hernia-like glob has receded back into the vent, but her vent is very swollen and is pulsing. Anyone have an idea of what may be going on?

I tried to get a picture of her vent, but it is too blurry. The swelling has gone down but it is dark purple in color and still protruding in my direction (I'm not sure if this is normal, but I don't think it is.) Also, I was wondering if anyone can help me out with her toe. She got a piece of hair wrapped around it and it swelled. I thought I got it off two days ago, but I was incorrect. We managed to cut off the hair, but it looks infected and the swelling is not going down. She also has cuts on that toe from other quail, which she is now separated from.

I have had 2 hens prolapse from laying to big of eggs put both of them down. I was afraid they would get infected.

Dark purple means lack of circulation, which means that tissue is dying and will soon rot and it will be an awful end. Please either put it down or take it to a vet.

Vegiecanner: I am sorry to hear that ): Thankfully I found an egg in her litter, so I know now that it is not egg binding. I also felt around for out-of-place eggs in her body, but found none. I am guessing (with absolutely no experience) that the hernia was from the stress of being held in an awkward position with no escape. I am hoping that now that it has receded it will not get infected,but only time will tell.She is preening and doing relatively well at the moment, albeit she is rather sluggish and puffed up. I soaked her foot in salt water, cleaned it, and dressed it in neosporin, but the stupid bandage will not stay on. I am hoping the swelling will go down.

USAmma: Her vent area is looking much better and has gotten lighter in color, almost a blue/gray, but if it does not return completely normal by morning I may very well put her down, because I cannot afford a vet visit ): It is the area all around her vent in a 3/4 inch radius that is discolored. The vent line itself is now pink. I will see if I can get a better picture. Thank you very much for the information.

Cloacal prolapse can happen in any hen but especially hens that lay large eggs relative to their size, double yolk eggs or are old for their species. In my experience it does not go away despite medical treatment. I've had it happen to a dove, parrot and tortoise and all died from it.

If it happens to one of my quail I won't let it suffer.

You can lower your protein percentage on birds laying really big eggs, in order to make them lay a little smaller little safer egg. More protein=More egg.
