I have found by changing to old newspapers tear into strips about 1 inch long or 25 mm and remove all straw never use straw again then dust each time with dermacous Earth then add lavender gathered in summer into my nesting coop. ,I never have red mites and my chickens are laying right through winter approx 7 to 9 eggs a day I have 12 chickens ! The newspaper keeps them warm and you can bury it use it as compost or if you should get red mites burn it goes up quickly as well try to make sure it keeps dry in coop I change mine twice a week ! As costs nothing ! This is omelette she was raised from a fertilised egg in newspaper in June now giving myself an egg a day she is an Essex ! How lovely does she look !
