Using 2X4 as Roost. Do they need to be rounded?

And they should be mounted so as to be removable for both cleaning and vermin-proofing.

Here are my roosting poles. I used landscaping timbers. They were cheap... stong and flat but rounded on the edge

I use fallen branches from neighborhood trees and make ladders out of them for roosts... when they get too "poopy", I'll just replace them. Right now, the branches are about 2" thick, but I can graduate to larger ones when the chicks get bigger. The chickens seem to love them and enjoy pecking at the bark for something to do. I also the ladder because I can move for cleaning.

Nice ladder out of branches! I really like that. Do you have any trouble with them pooping on the chicks below?

the logic behind using the wide side of a 2x4 is that they don't need to grip it with their feet so personally i don't see any point in rounding it off.

I didn't round mine. They are working just fine.

I've been using a non-rounded 2x4 inside the coop and they are doing fine. I have some 2-3 inch diameter branches out in the run they spend time also. Haven't had a chance to make them into a ladder or such, but plan to soon.

Ours are not rounded they are just 2x4 wide side up painted, with swing poop boards underneath them and the girls love both ( altho they seem to enjoy the poop swings more
