I am getting ready to go into lockdown with 10 Ameraucana and 11 Cuckoo Maran/Ameraucana for olive eggers. I was wondering if anyone has tried putting a divider in the incubator to separate different types of eggs so that the chicks don't mingle together after hatching and are easier to tell them apart. I am not sure if the olive egger chicks will look anything like the Ameraucanas or not so it may be a moot point.

If you did try a divider ~ what did you use.

Try wire mesh or a strip of cardboard.

I use 1x2's with slots cut in them so slimmer wood slides in...works okay...I can make several different compartments

I was thinking of using drawer dividers, like you would use in a sock drawer. I have seen them in plastic, which would be easy to clean.

I use hatching bags and they're nice because they're washable and can be used year after year. They are mesh bags with a drawstring and inside is a little corral made of wire to keep the bag high enough, and there is no chance of them getting out and getting mixed up.
What breed rooster were you using? If you were using a marans roo then the chicks will all be cuckooed (barred) and will look like a cuckoo marans chick,

I just whipped up a few myself using netting from an old bed canopy net. I made them about 24" long by 16" wide with a drawstring on one of the long ends, and it's big enough to insert the bottom part of a 1 doz. egg carton because I prefer to hatch in the cartons. I use some 3 - 4" high wire inside to make a frame for it to keep the chicks from getting tangled in the netting.

Sorry for hijacking this post but I have a question about the maran Roo crossed with ameraucana hen. Will it always be that the chicks will all be barred? What about the other way around? Ameraucana roo and Cuckoo maran hens? Will they make olive eggers as well?

Thanks

I have a hardware wire box I guess you would call it. I saw one posted in here once and I need to find that post. I wanted to see if I was doing the same thing or if theirs was a little better or easier than the one I made. I have a couple of weeks so I'm good for now. My searching skills in here are not very good or I'd post the link.

No problem with the question ~ it is one I would also like to know as mine are Cuckoo maran hens and Ameraucana roo eggs. They started to pip overnight so maybe I will be able to tell soon!

I ended up making a little divider wall using 1/4" hardware cloth ~ it isn't very pretty but hopefully it will work for this one hatch.
