using a hot potato to take spurs off a rooster?

She is 9 and she raised him from a chick carried him around like a baby doll forever. She will not let us rehome him so he has to go up in the coop when she is out there and it breaks her heart. Learning life lessons are hard but we are trying to do what we can to keep him for her. Thanks for all the good input I love BYC you folks are great.

Over the years, I've learned not to give a rooster too much treatment as a pet when young. They become more emboldened if you don't establish dominance with them much of the time. Letting them hop on your knee and eat out of your hand is fun, but a little goes a long way toward aggression at times. I have a California Gray rooster, and much like Leghorns, is a tough cookie, but very protective and good with his hens. A little while ago he tried to take both my legs out by getting each knee, one after the other very quickly, hahaha. I can laugh about with myself, but not if it came to a kid or someone else. I'll stand my ground quietly when he challenges me until he walks away, or I pursue him. More often I am aware of where he is, walk confidently and calmly, and he minds his own business. That keeps things peaceful more often. I handle and inspect birds when they are calm on the roost at night.
