At this time I have not got any pine shavings and was wondering if anyone had tried using the leaves from alfalfa hay. I filtered most of the stems out and have a large tub of just dry fluffy leaves. Will this be okay to use in the brooder?

Worked for me!

Just got my peeps the 1st of April and couldn't find pine shvngs in my VERY small town so I used some of the dried alfalfa hay that the horses had tossed around all winter. I left stems and all, just broke it up some so it would settle better. They seemed to love it!

First day, I covered it with paper towels so they could find food and stuff, but after that, just the hay. And I was amazed how those little gals got it all stomped and level in no time.

Used it for at least 5 days before I could get south and find pine.

Hope this helps!
