Using Cipro Instead of Baytril?

Hi everyone -
Can I use Cipro instead of Baytril? My favorite hen has gotten a case of Egg Yolk Peritonitis (EYP). I’m positive of this, as I’ve had 3 others over the years with the exact same symptoms. After searching this forum, it seems that some have had success with Baytril antibiotic. I don’t have any Baytril though and no time to wait for it to ship to me. I’ve been giving the hen Duramycin 10 for the past 2 days and she initially looked perkier after first administering it, but now it seems like the Duramycin just isn’t strong enough to fight the infection in her. So I found out that Cipro is the human equivalent of Baytril.. and I have an Rx on hand. It’s 250 mg. Can I use Cipro instead? Anyone have any idea how I’d determine the dose for a hen? I’m very desperate and don’t want to give up just yet. I had a hen survive 6 months after EYP with Duramycin but I think I need to use a stronger antibiotic this time. Thanks in advance.

I forgot to add that I also have Keflex (cephalexine) in case that may be a viable option as well... thanks in advance everyone

You're right, I read that Cipro is similar to Baytril. I see no reason why you cant use Cipro in a chicken. I'm sure someone in the chicken world has used it before on their birds.
You'll need to find the Baytril tablet dosage and apply it to the Cipro dosage for your hen as well as the milligram dosage for each. Hopefully it'll be the same.
I havnt used Baytril tablets before, however off the top of my head I believe the dosage is 1/4 or 1/2 tablet twice a day. It would be best to verify the dosages. You can check with Casportpony, she'a a math whiz lol.

Thanks so much. When I went to check on her this morning she had already passed. I wish I’d thought of the Cipro sooner. This is my 4th hen lost to EYP. It’s terrible. Anyway, if anyone in the future finds themselves in a similar situation, I found on an avian pet forum that 15-20 mg/kg of Cipro would work for birds.

I dont think hens with EYP stand much of a chance surviving with or without antibiotics. I'm sorry you lost her.
