Using dried leaves

Another vote for whole leaves - don't make more work for yourself. They break down amazingly fast with a flock of chickens digging and turning them.
We rake the leaves onto a tarp. Pull it into the run and dump it. The pile is 3-4 ' high, Within a few weeks, It is ground up and just a few inches higher.

We have a cycle it works well.
  • add leaves, yard waste, cut grass as they become available to the run
  • chickens scratch
  • Chickens add poop daily.
  • semi annual coop cleanout goes in the run.
  • Add the resulting compost to the gardens as needed.
Family and friends often come by to help themselves to a few barrels of compost.
