Using Hay In Nest Box

I have a nest box with carpet in it. It has worked fine. I made two more nest boxes in my coop addition. I put hay in them and the hay slowly disappears. They must be eating it. Is this bad for them? I am worried about it getting stuck in their crops.

I have used hay for 40 years with no problems- it gradually disappears because they scratch around in it

I also use hay. It does break down some when they scratch and just over time, but are they also scratching some out of the nest when they are rearranging it for their nests? Is your lip high enough to keep it in?
