Using lattice for roofing....

We have lattice on half of our roof, and the other half has a tin roof on it. The only thing we did on the top was put bird netting over it because we kept having little birds fly in in the winter for the scratch we had out, and then they could not figure out how to get back out.

Ooh, good point! We already have an influx of little birds coming to hang with the chickens. Our chickens have even let them eat out of their feeder (now I switched to a new feeder) which is so odd.

Actually, vinyl lattice is stronger than some of the welded wire out there, especially the small "privacy" spaced size. And as for climbing predators, you could put a strand of electric wire around the bottom and the top. I do this to all my runs (plus a second bottom wire 6" above the first) no matter what wire I use, as I have personally seen a dog tear through chain link fabric to get at a goat. I was astounded at the animal's strength and determination, and he wasn't even hungry. Imagine what a feral dog or a coyote that is starving could do. But I have yet to see an animal that will withstand continuing contact with a good electric fence long enough to get through fence wire.

I love the idea of electric fencing but I can't have it. I raise guide dogs so it could totally ruin the puppy in training, at least I'd worry about that. I do agree though that vinyl lattice is SUPER strong. We're going to do a couple methods of cover. Hopefully this weekend we'll get more finished and be finished in another week so I can share photos. Thanks for all the advice!

Rats and snakes.

Rats aren't a predator though are they? The same goes for most snakes as they would be going after eggs. The coop will be closed at night 99% of the time. There might be a couple days a year the coops stay open at night. Also, we're behind a six foot fence that already has snake fencing at the base. If snakes can climb six feet though I don't want to know. LOL
