Using Sand as Flooring- Help!

I only had to buy 5 bags for my 4x8 run. 3 50 pound bags of play sand at $3.43 each and 2 60 pound bags at 3.53 each. Cheap compared to everything else I was buying. Love it.

I love these prices. That's the price I am looking at heh! Honestly I will put in what I need and any extra bags I don't use- I will store them until the next time I have to change the litter. Pretty excited. No more horrific mud after the rain!

Sand IS Silica
There's no such thing as "silicate free" sand.

Just get the cheapest type you can find, and and don't overthink it, since SAND IS SAND

Well for some reason there were sands advertised as such (but now looking back: I meant silica free:
http://www.silicafreesand.com), but matter not! I did just get plain ole sand at Homedepot yesterday. The All-Purpose-Sand and it is the best decision ever. I never realized how much nicer in appearance and more sanitary it was.

wow, thanks - didn't know about Pdz - great tip! I'll use for both chickens and my goats. After rain it can get a little overpowering in their inside stall.... this will really be a help.

That's how I feels about it. All sand is silica. It cleans up nice.

I agree. I used play sand and they loved it. In the heat they like so burrow down in it and kick it up on their wings and feathers. I used it in the coop on the flooring and it made it easy to clean up. Not using it now, but did like when I did use it.

Question: if the coop run is covered in sand, how do you go about scattering scratch for the chickens? Do you just throw it on top of the sand?
