I have recently heard people using sand instead of bedding in coupes. Is that safe for them? Won’t they choke on it if it gets in there mouth?

What about with ducks? That is what I have.Chickens eat grit, and they eat small rocks. They would die if they didn't as they don't have teeth to grind up their food. They must rely on the grit and sand in their gizzard, which is at the beginning of the digestive tract.
So, no, eating sand will not harm a chicken.
My trouble with sand is that it stagnates in my wet climate area, and when mixed with my heavy clay soil, turns into concrete.
I like amending my clay soil with pine shavings in a deep litter method. If it begins to smell, I just add another layer of pine shavings. The composting also helps, and it makes for nice loamy soil compost that is perfect for gardens.
However, with the right soil and environment, many BYC owners like sand. They find raking it an easy way to keep their coops cleaner.
