Using Vinyl, tarps as 'farm equipment' question?

So I wanted to ask what you thought about this...

It would normally go in the 'farm equipment' section of threads, but I don't see a category for that.

To give you some back ground, we repaired our garage this year. But before that every year for the last 5 years, we didn't want to reroof it yet because it was a cheap really old 60 years old garage that wasn't seen from the street anyway. It was mostly in the back of the house. So there wasn't much reason to invest in it also, because it was so old.

So we'd put a tarp on it every year.

And every year these plastic whatever Walmart tarps would actually dissolve in the sun somewhere between 8 months and 11 months. This was quite amazing to see, because it would happen very suddenly and all at once with the threads all just collapsing at once. It seemed odd that one day it would look fine, and the next day its completely GONE. And this would happen every year.

So here's where my question comes into play;

If these plastic hybrid and other materials of tarps dissolve so fast, then how long would tent material last for if it was really being used, or needed to be relied on?

I hope it wouldn't just collapse and die in the sun like the tarps...but I have to assume its possibility.

But maybe some of the rest of you might have a better idea about this?

And because we all use tarps in farming and agriculture its reasonable to ask this here, and to think that some of you might know about this. I bet some of you cover your animal feed with tarps for example. (Tarps are quoted as being polyethylene, and polyester, and vinyl. But I don't know the percentage breakdown of them.

Tents are said to have some of the same stuff; nylon, (some felt), some cotton, polyester.

What do you think about this?

Thanks.

Tarps come in various materials and thicknesses. I use a vinyl billboard "tarp" as a pond liner. They are very thick and only have a few pinholes when they arrive. Mine has lasted 3 years and now needs to be replaced, mainly because an electrician cut a root to a tree beside it and the tree died. The falling branches have poked large holes in the liner. Otherwise I imagine it would have lasted a couple of more years.

I use canopies and cover my dog kennels/ chicken coops and hay with tarps. Heavy duty tarps lasts for 3 years in the Florida sun and withstand 80-90 mph winds during hurricane season.

Are you aware that used billboard canvas is for sale? It's made to withstand UV exposure and extreme weather. It will have colorful designs on them according to the ad that was screened onto the canvas. I hear it's pretty reasonably priced. This will get you started. https://billboardtarps.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkqOy4JTQ6gIVjsDACh3dLwRZEAAYASAAEgLyN_D_BwE You can google the topic for more sources.

They are very heavy duty. One side is printed but they have many that have the other side blank- either solid white or solid black. They've gotten more expensive as the demand has gone up. I'm not sure I'll buy another at the current prices. Used to be only a couple of outlets sold them, now they are even on Craigslist. Definitely worth the price in the past.
