Madchicken, I just offer oyster shell and pulverized eggshells on a separate dish for my girls. I only ever put out a handful at a time, and they gobble it up. I think that in part, the turkeys help with that. They'll try to eat anything, and if they start picking at the oyster shell, the chickens get excited and crowd around to pick at it, too. I've also seen the chickens eat snails in the warmer months, but now that it's cold, the turkeys eat the empty snail shells........whole............ Crazy birds.

Birdman, yeah, I am honestly a little displeased that your neighbor thinks he needs to give you so much grief. Our turkeys stay on our lawn and in our yard. Whenever they try to venture onto the lawn next door, we shoo them back into the yard. The neighbors that are complaining are across the street, and they seem to have a problem with us no matter what we do. I try to be friendly to them, but they can still be jerks. I've half a mind to complain about all the noise they make in the early morning with their motorcycles, if they try to get me in trouble with the city

Cynthia, yep, I have one of the EE/Leghorn crosses you hatched out this year. Mine sports a lot of Ameraucana features, but she's small, like a Leghorn. She tends to hang out with my Exchequer Leghorn, too. Her comb is pink, but I'm still waiting on eggs.

I'm pretty sure that my BO is the one that has been laying her eggs in the rosebush and getting me all excited. Oh Peachie, you little brat. That was a mean prank to pull on mommy, but thank you for at least laying. She's my only layer right now

see that drives me nuts, i mean if its not hurting you then why should you care? hopefully they will not say anything. as for my neighbor, well i will never be able to keep him happy. he thinks my yard needs to look like his and that will never happen, i mean i do not have the time to mow my lawn 4 times a week. he is just a crazy old man. as much as he hates me he needs me. i have done a lot for him and saved him over a thousand dollars this year alone by taking some trees down for him for free so he did not have to hire someone. hopefully your neighbor will not cause issues. its not like your turkeys are trashing their yard or anything. there are far worst things than turkeys, i mean they could be dealing with a drug house or something. i think they are lucky they have a neighbor like you. and if you get sick of it all then come buy a house by me :D

Its been a while trying to get ready for hatching remind me . What temp humidity and all the good stuff.

What kind of bator? Forced air needs to be around mid 30's or low 40's..watch the water when keeping it at that lower temp. Used to be considered a dry hatch, but most are keeping it at that now, and then there are those that go with no water at all until lock down. I keep water in at the mid 30's or low 40's, and don't even worry if it drops just below or goes up a bit. Until lock down, forced air, 60- 62%. That's me on the forced air.

On the still air, same goes for the humidity. During lock down, have found that the still air holds humidity like no other! I only keep it at 55 to 60% Had a 100% hatch this last time.

My broody girl keeps laying on one egg better than the other. She will have the one egg under her, but it isn't as warm. Tonight I decided to candle again, the one that was just barely under her chest, was getting quite cool. I had my flashlight, could see a lot of movement in the other egg, but not this one, so brought it in to candle..it moved. So, I kept it in. She just wants one I guess. I candled the two I had in..and had a quitter! So, now still have two eggs inside, still.. only one out with her.

Oh Man, Cynthia, if it were Feb, I would TOTALLY take that swedish cockerel from you, I'll be hatching them, but I really love that blue color and who knows if I would get that color from the people I'm getting eggs from.

Birdman/Red- sounds like you both have a grumpy old man problem, some people you can't please no matter what you do, I'm a worry wart, too, but in that situation, I just throw my hands in the air and hope for the best, sheesh!

I would take all of you for neighbors :) we would have the best, most fun neighborhood in town.

Phoenix, good luck on your hatch! Which ones are you doing?

I think I will do what Cynthia said with humidity this time with it being cold out/low humidity...I usually do the dry hatch/no humidity til lockdown...but the air is different this time of year, so I am going to use a little water this time. Sure hope it works...I can't decide if I should put a few under my broody or not! I am scared to let her try...due to the cold. The ones I incubate I think I will use my still air, the one with the fan and turner just did not have as much success as my still air. I have to wonder if the turner is not as good as hand turning on their sides, like they do in nature? What do you think Cynthia, did your bator with the turner work as well? I have not done lots of batches like you, maybe it was just bad luck.

No..I also thought I did better without the turner, but if I had things going on, and it wasn't a real expensive shipment of eggs, I would use the turner. I like hand turning.
Good thought on the humidity at this time of year. I forgot you did the dry hatch.

Let us know when you get those eggs! Pictures too!
