That decrowed rooster is kind of trippy. I can see why a lot of people would like to have a quiet rooster, but I like hearing my boys crow.

So I guess one of our neighbors made a comment about 'why do we have turkeys on the front lawn'. Meaning our lawn. So I hope we don't get turned in, because I know exactly who it was and they have been two-faced with us before about our animals. However, I believe I have come up with an easy solution. I'll simply dye the turkeys pink, and then I can say that they're my flamingo lawn ornaments

Lisa, glad to hear Bella is fitting in ok... hopefully you can woo here with some good treats, she got held a lot as a chick, but once she could get away from the boys, she's been flighty ever since, I think it's the Leghorn coming out... You're such a good chicken momma Lisa, if I didn't have young kiddos, mine would get held more, definitely...

DH never did believe me that chickens have their own personalities until he saw it for himself in the ones we have now...silly birds!

Ok, looks like I have a Swedish Hen Cockeral up for grabs. He's the blue one. Got an expert opinion on the Swedish Flower thread..and yes, It was the guy that Dalooras was talking about. He made no bones about it, and thinks my mille F. Swedish is a pullet, but to watch those wattles, because they are supposed to be practically unseen until POL. Well, so far so good on that one.

Any takers on a Swedish Cockeral? He's going to be gorgeous. May as well as a reminder..I have that lavender Orpington, and Cinnamon Sussex for sale. I know the lav. O. is a pullet. Thinking, the Cinnamon is too.

I looked into de-crowing a rooster a ways back and its a new procedure (an avian vet told me that) and the mortality rate is high, a vet has to cut the rooster's vocal cords and to do that you have to operate deep inside the rooster's neck and there's limited space so its really dangerous. If I remember correctly, its about $60 to try the procedure...but its been a while.

sorry you are having neighbor problems i have had my share of problems with one neighbor, he enjoys complaining about things such as me growing tulips in my yard... he is the reason i build a new coop this summer because it saves me the stress of dealing with him so much. do your turkeys go over to their yard? maybe bribe them with something, play real nice and maybe they will not complain. see for me my neighbors will not complain to the city about anything because i am a very valuable neighbor and always do what i can to help them out so they need me for things and do not want my help to stop.

Does anyone feed calcium carbonate (crushed limestone) to their chickens for calcium. I mix oyster shell with their feed but lately i have been getting some soft eggs or deformed. I have a snail problem during the summer and this is a good sorce of calcium. Now that its cold the chickens have no snails to eat. I bought some calcium carbonate and mixed it with their snacks so they dont have a choice to eat it. But can they have to much. Will the unused calcium just pass through their system?

i offer oyster shell free choice for my girls, they know how much they need and take as much as they need. i have actually heard its not so good to mix it with their feed like that because sometimes they do not get enough or will get too much. i just offer mine in a little 3lb hanging feeder. i also have a 3lb feeder full of grit that they can eat if they need it. oh and i do not feed layer feed anymore because i want them to only have as much calcium as they need

floyd actually died a few years ago he moved into idaho and was found dead.

Red, I love your "flamingo" idea. Fabulous! I hope your neighbors don't cause trouble.

I offer crushed oyster shell free choice, but I also get laying feed. The shell container ends up getting kicked into the dirt and then I get lazy and don't clean it out. But, I've never had trouble with soft shells.
