haha, that is too funny Shawn!! You really need to stop by the IDaho thread more often.. we really need some more life in there!!

COOL EE Madchicken!! Very cool looking bird!!

Cynthia, the pullet I have from you has been laying for about 3 weeks now... greenish eggs, noticeably getting bigger now...

Lisa, so glad to hear your girls are doing better, mine seem to back off on the laying a little when it's gray outside all the time, so maybe that is why, unless they're still recovering?? Since it takes 3 days to make an egg, they could just be getting better, still, maybe?

Bluejems.. from what I've read of those who FOR SURE want to have purebred eggs, they have to be away from the rooster for 4 weeks, to be SURE... otherwise they seem to say 3 weeks is good enough... Even if she's with another roo now, it doesn't matter, they can still store stuff from the other roo for that long, crazy eh?? If it were like that with people, nobody would have to have fertility treatments, lol!

Red.... you have silly birds, that is all I have to say, I LOL pretty much everytime you post something about them!

Yaay, I am glad to hear that it is getting bigger. How often is she laying now? Mine is green too. Was supposed to be blue blue, but, oh well..I like it. :)

Sundance, I can't wait to see pictures of your seramas. What a great Christmas gift! I'm sorry about your showgirl not doing well. I hope you can fix her. Heaven knows if anyone can, it's you. Glad to hear the de-crowing seems to have worked. So cool!

Blujems, mine have been terrible about eggs too. I only got ONE today. ***?! This is a bad time too, because I promised a boy 2 dozen eggs this saturday for him to hatch for a science experiment. I've only got 6 right now. <gulp>

That's a pretty egg, Cynthia. You never know, maybe she was just playing. I caught my RIR AND my GLW on the nest today, and neither actually laid an egg for me.

I have seen that chick counting down the days. I wondered if maybe it got to be hours because it got impatient?

Lisa, I can't wait to see what you have hatch.

Hmm...candled tonight I think I had one quit, it is not as big and not moving....the other three look good and are swimming around. So, down to three! Lockdown is Sunday, please oh please make it to lockdown my little three musketeers!

Sphinx, I think I will get some fun mixes from these next eggs from Blujems. I am excited now. I had planned to order some in January, this will fill the time in between perfectly, and there will be some fun chicks to boot. When are you going to hatch some of your own? You know you want to! :D

So I saw the SUN today! WOW~!!!! It stayed out off and on for a few hours. Maybe that will give the girls a little push in the right direction....I just think this time of year can be so miserable when it is gray all the time, I think my girls agree.

Well hopefully today will bring more eggs. I keep finding "fart" eggs so everyone got fresh oyster shell yesterday. I am sure it has something to do with it being so dark lately. The OE have had them falling in the water dish. I have the light on in the coop all day but it isn't the same as sunshine.
I am sorry about your egg Lisa. Hopefully the remaining 3 all make it. Will cross my fingers.

So, I heard something I haven't heard in a very long time. A really weak attempt of a crow. I was saying, chick chick chick to my babies in my nursery hutch, then from inside the grow out pen I hear this funny sound that I knew what it was right away.
I'm thinking what? I have all girls..oh wait..then I remember that pretty little partridge Silkie was looking pretty much like a boy. Pretty sure now. Too funny.
Diana, how old is that Partridge? Looks to be only around two months old. I've had them try to crow sooner than that.
Now I am worried about my black one I kept from my 100% hatch, starting to look boyish, more comb than the blue I kept..this is one that came from an olive egg ~ of course! I am never going to get an olive egg layer!! It's not meant to be. I'm throwing a hissy fit there...hmm, looks more like what I'll be doing when I go to therapy this morning and get into the pool. Nah, lol..won't be moving those arms that fast! Unless I start sinking.

It was her egg Sphinx. I got two brown eggs yesterday again. I took this small one in, and later the sex link was in there..she gave me a very nice big egg..the second big egg since she started..I'm thinking she will start laying them on a reg. basis now. I hope the blue girl's gets big like that.
Sphinx, isn't there anyone around close that you know that has chickens..with fertile eggs? Two doz. by this weekend. Man, you must have been getting a lot of eggs a day from your girls. I only have 5 layers. I have others that should start in Jan. the end of Jan. Then March/April. Hmmm, don't have any that will start in May, best get on that.

I'm thinking I would like a nice barred rock out there this spring with my other layers. I will be replacing the hen that isn't producing as many eggs as the others. So far, the four that have started are going to town. My Wheaten is on the nest this morning, because she didn't lay yesterday..the only one that didn't.

Lisa, good luck with those little eggs. Crossing fingers all go well in lock down. Tiny eggs, lower humidity. That was one of my biggest problems with the small eggs. When I would open one that didn't hatch, it was soggy..all of the ones that didn't pip, were soggy and they had drowned. Keep the humidity around mid 50's. If ya want.

my Seramas came. Funny I was expecting a phone call from the post office but the bell rang and the mail man who is my neighbor delivered them to me. He knew I was home waiting for the call. A tiny black rooster and two chocolate hens they are really pretty the brown color of Hersheys chocolate, I have never seen chickens that color, Can't wait to get some eggs. The birds are around 6 months old. I'll try to get some good pictures of them. On a sad note my showgirl died, Pretty sad.I tried

Sundance, I'm so sorry that your showgirl died. :( I know you really loved that chicken. I can't wait to see pictures of your seramas. Are you going to decrow the rooster? Have him be Patient 2?

Cynthia, giggling over the crowing attempt. You know, I'm going to be having a lot of ameracauna/bcm/legbar crosses eggs this spring. You should hatch some!

Last night was a little sad for me. My friend called me in a panic- they discovered their black sex link was all swollen. It was so weird- it felt like picking up a water balloon. She was so swollen she couldn't walk. It seemed like she fit all the symptoms of ascites. She wasn't doing well at all, and we figured she was just about to die, so my friend begged me to attempt to drain her. I tried to follow the instructions I found online, but I could barely draw blood (I think my exacto knife wasn't sharp enough), and she died before I could go deep enough to reach the fluid pocket. It was really sad, and so bizarre. When she told me that the chicken's underside felt like a water balloon, I didn't expect that description to be so apt.

Sphinx, that is the saddest thing. Eww it just sounds like a miserable way to go too. Poor baby!

And poor showgirl Sundance! Those are such fun adorable chickens too, so easy to get attached because they are so pet-like, and sweet. Hope the rest make it through the cold.
