Utah!

Thanks for all the great advice from everyone! This really seems like a great close-knit community.

We live in the Akagi Farm development in Draper, so I'm pretty sure we're limited to 6, but we do have great neighbors and 2/3 of an acre to help give a little more buffer (and no plans for roosters!)

We have a little while before we can start construction on the coop, so not quite ready for chicks yet, but will keep you all posted as we get closer to this great adventure!

Personally, I think that 2/3 of an acre is plenty to have more than 6 chickens, but I'm kind of a rebel.

I'm not ordering any chicks this year. I think I may try to pick up some black copper marans chicks because I need some more of those. I'll be hatching a bunch for the various schools this year, and I'll probably end up keeping a couple because I don't see myself being able to sell all of them.

Hey everyone! I know I've been missing, the holidays have been crazy! I didn't catch up on everything so I hope all is well and everyone has had a lovely holiday seasons on so far! My girls are doing well, but HATE the snow. They won't even go outside while I'm cleaning their coop. They just shuffle around to the other side. :)

I've put a container with chicken nipples in for their water, but I've only seen one of them drinking from it. I'm pretty sure more than one of them are based on how fast it's emptying, but I'm not sure. I've kept other water in there for them just in case. Any hints on how to make sure they're all drinking from the new container?

Here are some pictures. :D

Chiko, I ordered chicks to come March 4....Mottled Houdans, White snowballs (pure white polish), naked Neck Turkens, White crested Black polish, and a couple GSL and BR :) I am so excited, I have never gotten chicks in the mail before, I remember how excited you were when you got yours, you inspired me to do it :)

I will have several extra mottled houdans and possibly a few of the NN, WCB, and snowballs. They were all supposed to be sexed female, they are from McMurray.

Andrea, you boy is adorable! And your chickens are pretty cute too :D

Sphinx if you have fertile GL polish eggs from thing one and thing 2 in the next month or two let us know, I may be interested. Your girl has the most beautiful gold laced crest, mine is all black with white dots and has never laid an egg so I am debating trying again.

Blujems is hatching FBCM tomorrow night :) I have a few of her eggs in too, they are from the birds I picked up in Idaho last summer from, pawtraitart. I will be headed over there again this spring too if you want me to bring anything back, she has Black tail buff marans I am going to try, the eggs in her avatar look really nice :)

Cynthia pm me if you are serious about a showgirl, so I know which one to save for you.

FYI the sooner you get your chicks the sooner you get eggs. Chicks can't go out in the coop anyway. They have to be kept in the house or heated garage under a heat light until they are 6 to 8 weeks old

Aravis, your girls are cute! I think that if the water is disappearing fairly quickly, and you see 1-2 chickens drinking from the nipple, it's a pretty safe bet they all are. Your son is so darling!

Lisa, that sounds like a fun assortment of chickens. Are you going to think your existing flock to make room, or just expand? My polish isn't laying right now. I think once she starts and the weather improves, I'm going to separate everyone out, with Thing 1 and Thing 2 in the time out coop together. When that happens, I'd be thrilled to get some of her eggs to you. She did turn out really pretty, especially given her beginnings. I'll probably have you pick up a FBCM from pawtrait, her hens are so beautiful.

I candled this morning. I saw heartbeats in 5 of the eggs. My brown egg I couldn't see much, but I think that's because it's early and it's so tiny. Nothing in my egg that's 12 hours behind everyone. Some veining in my crack baby egg and the start of something in the egg I grabbed from the fridge; it's definitely not as far along. But, considering it's less than 72 hours in, it's exciting to see anything!
