Utah!

Oh Cynthia How fun! And good to know about the stripes. You learn something new every day on here! Love the baby pics. All three butts right there together, how sweet :love I really do love the deep red on the RIR babies. And the little red tips on their beaks.

Mine are in lockdown. 17 made it out of 18, but there are some I cannot see in. BUT I can see that there is vesseling around the air cell so I know they developed to at least a point, so we will see. Only had one not develop at all out of the 18. (Way to go on fertility Blujems!) I feel like some of the FBCM look lighter inside and may have quit.

Also the FBCM air cells are smaller, they did not evaporate as much as I wanted them too, they are not as big as the chart says they should be...but for the sake of the other eggs I had to average the humidity out. The air cells on the ameraucana eggs were getting way big. One of them looks like it is almost half the egg. Hope it all works out. One egg was rocking this evening :) It is a FBCM. Crossies! :p

Sphinx,
Thanks for your graciousness & for sharing details about your success with the other chick. That must have felt very rewarding & I'm glad some good came from the hard things you went through with your chick earlier.

Cynthia,
Very fun things to learn, sexing your chicks! I didn't know that about RIR chicks either. Stripes sure are pretty on them.

Well I had 5 chicks hatch. One more is chirping. So it looks like 6 out of the 10. 5 of them had air sacks down the sides and one of those chicks hatched! These eggs were so small. I am a wreck from this hatch. It was way to stressful. I've had to boot 2 of the chicks. One had curled feet the other had a toe that looked like it was dislocated. Sheesh!

I hope this chick comes out before bed time but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. They are so tiny and cute I will take pictures tomorrow.

Beautiful chicks Cynthia! Have you done the boot thing before? I hope it will work for the both of us.

Good luck Lisa! 17 eggs = a lot of little baby chicks!

Speckled thanks for all your amazing info on taking care of hatching chicks. I can't tell you how much it has helped me with this hatch.

WOW! Those are nice looking chicks, Dont you just love the deep red color. I have had a couple RIR chicks and if i remember the hens did have a strip. and the roo's didn't. the roo's belly feathers (fluff) was also much lighter then the hens. her is one of my hens at a couple weeks but you can still see the stripes.
What kind of incubator are you using? I plan on getting one so i can do the whole egg order thing. It looks like so much fun.

LOL...I have to chuckle first. Check out that chick in the back ground, wanting to get into the picture. Cute babies. :)

I've had to boot a lot through the years. Here a a few pictures of how I do it...now. As I've said, I use black electrical tape. Works great. One needed the left foot done, the other, the right foot. I will take it off in the morning to see how they look. If they are walking on their feet normal in a couple of hrs..at least holding them straight, then I'll keep it off. Sometimes I need to retape and let them keep it on for another day.

Wow Lisa, 17 out of 18 going into lock down! Way to go! Good luck! Looking forward to more pictures. I will put up some pictures tomorrow of all of my babies. I can't believe how fast chicks grow. Those black babies are so much bigger than the RIR's. But, the Nankin seems to be about the same size of the RIR babies that hatched today.

Hey, I think Gary asked me what kind of bator I use. I love the still air! I am thinking I should have stuck with the still air all those years. Those fans just aren't necessary. I seem to be doing better at hatching again. I did well when I first started a few years back, but then, not so well..but, having said that, I started buy shipped eggs. Now, the test. I have ordered Barred Rock eggs. Shipped. We will see how well this still air does with shipped eggs. Will be interesting, since it's also a very cold winter. These eggs are coming from Iowa. Not too far away, and I've had luck from that area before. They are waiting for weather to be a little warmer in their area too. I want some Barreds..and, I want.......that olive egger. I've been asking all over these threads if anyone is selling olive eggs..the real olive color!! I think I may have someone. :D

on the topic of chest bumping, many of my hens chest bump. i see it now and then, often with a change in pecking order. sometimes i swear they do it for fun. my little buff orp that i got from you cynthia does it a lot, she even will do it to my hand now and then lol. then many of the girls in my flock are odd like my welsummer that has a nice set of spurs lol.

Cool Lisa, hope you have a better hatch than mine. I am excited.
We got another baby goat last night. but ended up losing the mother. It was rough.

BluJems, that kid is so cute, I think I like it even more than the first. Is that the one whose mother you lost? That is so sad. Was it her first baby?

Lisa, best of luck on your hatch!!

Cynthia, my Godzilla RIR (who was supposed to be a GLW) was all yellow at hatch, and she's a girl. That was a weird situation though, wasn't it? Your chicks are very cute. My friend's chicks are starting to hatch, and it looks like maybe the legbar mom has a marans dad. It's entirely possible that could be an olive egger. I'm not sure if he's wanting to keep all of the babies....

Hattie, good luck with the boot. I've only had to boot once, and it was a smashing success.

Oh blue. You lost the mom? So sorry. This is a darling baby. Now you have to feed it right? Or will the other mom feed it..showing my knowledge of other farm animals besides chickens. Oh that baby is cute.
