Utah!

red i am so sorry :( :hugs . for the vole i would not waste your time with the water trick because more often than not it does not work and makes it harder to get rid of them. the best way to get rid of them is get some rodent smoke bombs, what you do is stick one end in the tunnel and pack dirt around it and light the fuze that is sticking out and seal off any other holes you see, what it does is pumps massive amounts of poison gas into the hole, killing the animal. and it makes it so you do not have to deal with the body of the animal :) also there are lots of great cats in the shelter, you will find some of the best little hunters there because often hunting was the main way they got food. plus you could save the cats life so it would be good for both you and the cat :)

Just joined BYC.... hello to all the fellow Utahns. I'm out here in Duchesne (husband wouldn't move my way when we started dating...lol).
WELCOME!

My Icelandics got a hold of one of my chicks and tore it apart, then started eating it
hit.gif
So I'm down to one chick. WHY do my animals keep dying?!?! It's not like I don't do everything I can to care for them! I boarded up that stupid cage so that there was nowhere for a chick to get out! And now my broody is freaking out, and so is the lone chick. I am so mad. I don't know what to do. So I caged the Icelandics and those stupid birds can STAY in there for another three weeks until I get more eggs!!
That is soooo incredibly sad! Sorry!

Welcome to BYC! And the Utah thread

I love chicken people and we have really great local chicken people.

Speaking of...the eggs Sundance gave me are due to hatch this coming Friday
big_smile.png
for the first time I am really optimistic that some chicks will hatch. Most of them showed development when I candled last week. The houdans go into lockdown on Saturday. I only saw four out of twelve with them, but am leaving them in til the finish. I have birchen marans in also, but they are only four days in. They are the first eggs that I have had shipped to me that had 100% in tact air cells. Feeling pretty optimistic about them also.

My irritated post for the day: went to turn my compost on the east garden lot and discovered a vole mound. :gah what do you even do about those??!?!! I have been gardening my whole life and never run across those. I found one in a field once and it became a pet for a few years, but have never had one in my yard/garden. Maybe because I have always had cats...? My cat died last spring.

I just put up with them.

Thank you Brad

Cats are a good help with rodent problems. We haven't had voles here (yet) but we do get mice every so often. Our cats are all good mousers, and they usually take care of them pretty quickly.

Sundance, I may take you up on that. Let me think for a bit, okay? Thank you so much, you're a sweetheart

I have a Spayed female Sphynx cat I am looking to place in a home. She is one of my retired breeders and needs a special home. She will be placed at no charge if your home meets these requirements. No small children, no other cats. Dogs are ok. She loves to sleep in the bed under the covers. She likes to sit in your lap. She will play with a teaser.

oh how i wish i could take her but we have a cat, although we are good at keeping our cats separate, like we did before our other cat died last month. but anyway i hope you find her a great home! she is so beautiful!

Ok Voles---we have tons of them, we live surrounded by a field. You get a piece of black 2 " PVC pipe, about 12 inches long. Put Vole/gopher bait in the center of the pipe (comes in a tall canister at Home Depot, like the Sevin dust) and lay it flat by the area infested. We put about a dozen pipes around the yard in the fall. Dogs, cats, chickens can't get to the bait, but the voles go right in the black pipe, it is right up their alley....and die. Be careful when you pick them up in the spring not to let the bait fall on the lawn, and you should be good to go. There has been the question asked about if the vole leaves the area and dies, then a chicken found one, could it die from the poison if it eats the poisoned vole. So far we have not come accross that happening, but I am sure it could be a concern...so far I m willing to take the risk, because they tunnel all over in our lawn underneath the snow and can literally destroy it over the winter.

Red, I am broken hearted for you. What the heck to the Icelandics for doing that!! That is just sad, a big hug to you my friend, we love you :hugs I am so sorry.
Welcome Desert Springs! This is.the.best.place.ever.!!

Sundance, that cat is amazing, i still get taken aback when you post pictures. They are so unique!

Red just left with a new baby to put under her mom. She laughted at my living room. I have a Serama mom and her babies in an aquarium on the floor so I can enjoy them. Its so fun listening to her cluck and talk to her babies

sundance, that was so nice of you. Night time is a good time for her to put a baby under mom.

I showed my husband your kitty. I would take it, and here comes the but, two reasons, my hubby is not fond of cats, although we've had them before, he would not really care that much if I took it, but, again, I have a lap dog that would not..like a kitty on his lap. Very pretty photos like Lisa said. :))
Have to ask, is she what they call a bi-color? That's what we called our two colored cats when I raised Persians in my last marriage. A lot of fur! Just the opposite of yours.

Sundance, your front room is awesome! And thank you again so much for the chick -- and the kitty medicine. I stuck the new baby under my broody and she took it, no problem. Poor thing seems a little traumatized from the day. I have to laugh because I think that chick is ADHD. I went in and out of the garage several times, and almost every time, I heard a steady "peep peep peep peep peep" coming from under my girl. I think she will feel better to have two babies again. I should never have put her in the big cage. Stupid human points for me

I did end up tossing one cockerel a few feet when he got too close to her earlier............and one of my pullets got her feathers roughed up because she bit me. None of the Icelandics are happy with me right now, and that's fine. I'm not exactly happy with them at the moment. They even ate the marble-sized stones I had in the waterer for the babies. I don't get it. It's not like I don't feed them enough. Sure hope I don't have a bunch of dead chickens this week

I have been having bad dreams the last few nights that my chickens were all being hurt or killed. It kind of makes sense now.

Ugh, I know. Gripe gripe gripe. I'm sorry. I'm not trying to bring anyone down. I am just so ready to jump in a lake right now.
