Utah!

After resting all day yesterday as dear Brian can attest to. Went out early, Redid the chickens water cleaned the buckets really good the applecider vinegar and refilled for the nipples. I put a nipple waterer in with my tiny Serama she immediatly went over and started to teach the chicks how to drink from them really cute. She has 2 chicks 2 quail and 4 chuckers under her. The chicks and chuckers can drink from the nipples the quail not so much as they could not reach. so I put a couple of rocks under it so the quail could reach, Also put in an alternative waterer for the quail. resting today for a bit then need to go to Orem to pick up my cat.

I respect your persistence & courage in making sure the chicks got what they needed, and am amazed at your resourcefulness in figuring how to get results! You're really showing some caring where it's critical, it sounds like.
Wishing you the best in your rehabilitation of your new little flock of cheepers!

Thanks Speckled!!

I just knew that had I left without resolving the problem, it would have haunted me. DH knew I wasn't going to let it go, that's why he wandered off..... he knew what was coming.

When he wandered back, his comment was... "Oh great, more chicks"...lol.

This morning I checked on them, expecting a couple fatalities for how bad they were..... some had past sores from someone previously ripping off the poop
somad.gif
; others had virtually no butt from the butt acid eating it away. Surprisingly they all are up and running around....still didn't count them...sheesh. Showed DH and he commented he had no clue there was that many...lol.

This morning I have to Prep H the ones needing it.

good for you. I was there 2 days ago and had a fit because of same reason. I stood and watched while they did all the butter cup and marans, they promised they would continue with the others as I was not well enouogh to stand and make them.
At least you attempted to make them do their job.... and you, still not very well. I'm sure those babies greatly appreciated it.

Those poor babies.... I get all fired up

. Unfortunately I'm a person who, after being in the corporate world for so many years, and overseeing head strong men, can be a little forceful. I don't see it, but it's well documented on past employee reviews...lol. Friends and family also verify it. The manager really didn't stand a chance. A six foot one red head fired up over animal neglect and not having time to do THEIR job.... now really.... who was going to win that outcome...hahaha.

Sounds like my new 7 chicks that t rescued from the daycare, took me over an 1 1/2 hours to see there feathers.. At least they didn't have that much pasty butts. I hate looking at the chicks Cal Ranch.
Next time I visit Cal Ranch... they are hearing an earfull too. I may find myself banned from them...lol. Yea right!!

Wow, Desert. You go girl! I'm glad you rescued those little chicks. I think sometimes that pasty butt flares up pretty fast. I have seen it happen with one of my birds, and after I got it cleaned off, the bird was happy and fine, but had some more pasty bum the next morning. So, I got to know that chick (and it's bum) well

So good on ya for helping the little critters!

I have only had one experience with pasty butt (knock on wood

).... wasn't even quite sure how to handle it but had to do something and knew it was just common sense.

How cold is too cold to through the almost 5 week old chicks outside in a grow out pen with a 3 foot by 4 foot small coop for the day. I'm not planning on leaving them outside till they are use to being outside for a while. Hoping that they will just move in with the 8 week olds outside in a few weeks, they will all be in the same area all day long, just separated. I just want them out of the house during the day.

Its currently 62 with a light breeze where I'm at right now. I was thinking that once it hits 65 I'm throwing them outside, but I don't want to shock them with the cold. My Barnyard mix is fully feathered, the FBCM is lacking in feathers, and then the Silkies are extremely fluffy, which I guess is their adult feathers, I think they get fluffier everyday. They can go into a good solid coop, that only has a door, I didn't put in any vents since I wanted it to stay warmer. But I could easily cut out a vent really fast if you think they need one. The door is face away from any type of wind.

Desert good for you~! So glad you brought it to their attention. They might do better now, just because you followed through with them...

and You are SOOOO welcome for the roosters, I am so glad they went to you, I know they will have a great home! I feel like they are very very lucky

Lil--the guy that wanted the Lav Am---I think I will say never mind to all of that, he turned out to be a stinker. Long story short, he bought some chicks from me and asked me to hold them, and day after day kept saying tomorrow, then said he changed his mind and won't call me back. I do not know what his deal is, but better off not messing with him for sure. I have two EE's left for sale that are about 4-5 weeks old if anyone is interested. I think one is male and one is female, they are really pretty. I did get the others sold but these are the last two I have left in my garage. yay! I am down to under 50 chickens again.

Showgirl eggs hatch in 6 days though lol

I've walked away before, with coaching from DH that it's not my problem.... then have felt horrible that it was a matter of life or death for those babies. NEVER AGAIN! It's kinda like the starfish on the beach story.... it matters to each of those babies!!!

Yep, there's a lot of flakes in this world!! He probably wouldn't have given those babies a good home either.

My fav's and ams are due a week from today. I sure hope some hatch!!
YAY!!! Hoping you have a great hatch!!

Hello all:frow

Want to send a huge thanks to Casa for the Wheaten and Blue Wheaten boys.... they are beautiful and didn't waste anytime getting a drink of water and starting in on the food.  They know they're home!!! :)

Another huge thanks to Sphinx for making the chicken train work to get them to me. :D So nice to see you again!!!

By the time we arrived home tonight I ended up with more than just the two roos from Casa.

Stopped in at the Riverton IFA to buy some additional chicken supplies and some DE.  Of course I have to go look at the chicks :p , even though DH tries to steer me away...lol.  I see that two babies have horribly caked butts plus the heat lamp is off :( , or burnt out on 2 breeds.  I immediately start looking for an employee and DH gives me that look like, 'Oh great, here we go'.  I found a young man and explained the heat lights were out on two breeds.... he mentions he knows and shrugs it off.  I loudly tell my husband that is why nobody should buy their chicks there, because they don't care about the poor helpless little things :rant .  DH looks at the young man like 'you better do something, or this won't be the end'.  The young man fiddles with the brooders and finds someone has turned off the lights, which he turns on.  I thank him and then mention they have babies who have severely poopy butts that are dried hard.  He claims again that he knows, but does nothing. :rant :rant   I mention they will very likely be dead by morning and again he agrees and does nothing. :rant :rant :rant   (DH knows I'm on a mission and wanders off).  At this point I tell the young man I don't have time to clean them myself but will take them if they're FREE.  He looks at me and hesitates and says they can't do that.  My comeback is.... then you clean their butts.  He told me that they have someone who does that and I ask where they are.  He says they will be in in the morning.  I say, yea, when the babies are dead.  At this point I ask to talk to the manager.  When she shows up she is obviously not very happy with my attitude.  I mention the chicks need immediate care and that since I don't have time to clean their butts, I can take them for FREE and they won't die there.  She agrees but is not happy about it.  The young man grabs a box and plastic gloves which I also grabbed a pair, and I grab the first bad butt chick, then another.... at this time the manager comes back and I tell her there is more than two.  She looks at their butts and mentions they're not really that bad :smack .  I ask if she wants to clean them cause they need to be done immediately.  She then agrees to let the chicks that are bad, go :he .  The young man is to keep track of how many of which kind are given to me.  The manager comes back and upon seeing how bad some of them are, thanked me for being so conscientious :th . It became very apparent these chicks had NOT been cared for, for days!!  Their butts and toes were encased in poop and hardened chick starter.  .

Anyway, the slip they gave me showed I took 3 Black Australorp pullets, 3 Buff Brahma pullets, 2 Cuckoo Maran pullets, 1 Rhode Island Red pullet, and 3 Sicillian Buttercup pullets for a total of 12 chicks.

I just spent the last 3 hours soaking their little butts and toes, working away the 'mess' and doctoring their poor little toes and butts with ointment (tomorrow I'll be better able to judge who needs the prep H).   There was supposed to be only 12 chicks.... but while cleaning I lost count at 19.  Looks to be 2 Silkies in there, and a Lakenvelder, and maybe some  BSL,  since some babies look so much alike (at least to me), I may have to wait on what they turn out to be.  Tomorrow I'll count them.

Poor babies... they had that weight on their butts for so long they couldn't even walk without falling forward after I cleaned them up.

I just checked them and they are flitting around... :cd happy!!!

Going to bed..... finally :sick .
I'm so glad there is someone out there like you! I would have done the same thing. Last time I went to the IFA in american fork they had some ducklings last week and there was 4 of them in there, when I took a closer look I noticed 2 of them were dead. I went and told the workers they need to pay attention to what goes on with those poor defenseless ducklings and chicks and take better care of them. Its so sad how we 'customers' need to tell them how to do their jobs. Its very frustrating! Again I'm happy that there are people like you who don't out up with that.

With mine... I keep them in until they're 8 weeks old and have lowered the heat lamp temp (I have them on an adjustable dial) each week until they can handle the outside temps. Then they go into an enclosed, wind shielded coop with an adjoining door into another vented coop. They stay there until almost 16 weeks old which is when, I personally, merge them, at night, in with the grown flocks, which some still have free range and others are in their own breed perspective coops, with runs..
