Ok...I got some eggs for my broody from Lisa....thank you...I have never done this before. Anyone have rules...guidelines..tips...or advice? How long to hatch? Is there anything I should do?

Just give the eggs to the hen. She'll know what to do with them

They typically take 21 days to hatch, though some can come a little sooner and some just a tad bit later. Cynthia pointed out to me before that you want to handle those eggs very gently. If/when you candle, don't make any fast, sharp movements while holding the eggs. They are fragile little things! Congrats on your first experience! It is fun.

Speaking of incubating eggs, I made the mistake of watching one of my Youtube videos today of my hen that hatched out the Icelandic chicks in later winter. It's making me want to collect eggs from my Icelandic girls again. Sigh, trouble.

Good luck! I have not had any luck with the Houdans eggs yet...the NN/SG eggs do come about a day early so start watching on day 20 :) Can't wait to see how she does! If something happens to them, I can get you more no prob :)

I draw lines on mine with a colored pencil. Crayons dont work well cause the wax melts over time. The lines are to help make sure other hens aint sneeking eggs in the clutch when mamas out getting a drink and food. Check the eggs often for poop as this will cause bacteria to grow and kill the chick in the egg.

She's got the place all to herself!

I have a spare coop that I usually use to break broodys...this time I will use it to hatch!

Does anyone know of a source for free pallets? I need some more coops and have an idea to make them out of pallets.
You can come get them from my work, A guy just took a lot on Friday but we still have 15 or so. We add 1 or 2 a day. they aren't the 4 x 4 pallets. They are used for doors so they are the size of a door. If you strip them down there is a lot of good wood on them.
