Utah!

Since i re-homed my rooster quail the little hens act so much different. They come up to the wire and make little chirps to me. They also will let my touch them. I cant pet them or pick them up yet but i am working on it. They don't like table scrapes like my chickens but love apples, pumpkins, and spaghetti squash. they also like crickets from pet smart.

Aw. Cute little quail.

Turkey journal entry ahead!

I drove out to Tooele today and brought home a turkey I had out there. He was from last winter and was supposed to have been processed a long time ago, but things never lined up time wise. He's big enough that I can't dress him out on my own, so my neighbor is going to help me get him ready for freezer camp on Monday before work. The turkey's leg gave out on him a little while ago, and I can tell it's been hurting him, which is why I want to get him done.

That's one thing I don't like about the fast-growing breeds. They are prone to so many bad health problems like joints or limbs giving out, heart attacks, asthma......it's all because of their rapid growth. It makes me really sad, especially because this turkey is one of my animals and I don't like it when animals suffer. He was very upset when I picked him up and muscled him into the carrier, since his leg is no good. He couldn't even turn around in there because he's so big, and I took my biggest carrier. So when I got home, I helped turn him around and he just seemed depressed. It made me a little heartsick.

I got him out into the preserve and helped him out of the carrier, got him some water and food and starting setting up a shelter around him. He actually perked up quite a bit about being home. He was making happy chirrupy noises and guzzling water, eating his food and stretching his wings like it felt so good. I stayed out there with him for a few minutes to make sure he was okay. I feel a little better knowing that at least now, he's happy. I will be sad come Monday, but also relieved that he doesn't have to suffer anymore. I've had this guy since he was a few days old, so he's kind of near and dear to my heart.

I am so mad right now. We have some neighbors that keep leaving their fence wide open so that their dog can get out and wander the neighborhood. Well, he's out again this morning, and after I let my Icelandic babies out. I tried to catch them and can only get 1/3. So, I hope that dog doesn't come up here, because I'll probably lose chickens. And now I'm really wondering if that's what happened to my turkey.

Found the missing turkey. She showed up four streets away from here. Spent more than an hour chasing her with the help of neighbors, including climbing onto two roof tops. She flew off and I can't find where she went now. I am so, so frustrated.

Red,
I'm feelin' for you with your wanderin' turkey. But I'm glad you've caught sight of her & have a better idea of where she is at least.

Melisa,
For keeping water from freezing--You can get a heated dog water bowl for about $20. Or you can buy a shop light in the hardware section at Wal-Mart for about $8 and put a 150-watt bulb in it & hang it near the water bowl where it can help thaw water. (Be careful to keep the cord securely attached to a wall or something. Those cords are easy to fray & become a fire hazard.)

I am so glad she is alive a am sure you will catch her. Do you have a net or a leg catcher? When you catch her clip her wings. I have a net and a leg catcher if you need it

Last night I got home and one of my RIR was missing. I have had one that won't go back to roost at night since getting my new two chickens. But after a week I thought she would for sure go back. Well last night I about had a panic attack when I got home and she wasn't in the coop roosting. After about 20 minute my husband and I found her. She was on my porch behind my decorative ladder hiding there (almost like she new I would find her there and would take her to the coop). I picked her up and got her to the coop safetly. I have become pretty attached to my chickens. I'm so glad I found her! I was so upset that I lost her!
