Utah!

We just did our posters and stuff today. We get cookies on Monday, and then deliver pre-orders. Booths start March 14th. But I was told once we get them we can deliver presales, and sell cookies who want them before booths, just no booth till March 14. Kimmy if you want I can hatch some out with my Olive Eggers, you will love Wendys Marans, I have 2, and just love them. I will be so sad if I can get new ones next year since my girls will be going on 2. I hope you get to keep your rooster. All fingers crossed.

Wendy it looks like you need to whip out that incubator. :D. I can through some in with my OE, I think I'm going to buy a dozen Ameruacanas to put with my OE, but I could easily fit a dozen or so more. I'm going to set for Easter, so March 30th, and I it will only be my 2nd hatch so hopefully it goes as good as the last.

I have one Maran egg in my bator now.  Bought different breed eggs from a gal.  OE's, BO's, Marans, but only got one, which I don't mind, because I don't care for them. Love the egg color, but I don't care for the chicken.  If it hatches out a girl, do you want it?  It will go into lock down on the 9th.

When are these girl scout cookies supposed to come out..I haven't seen any yet.   yumm..

Why don't you like Marans? I've never had one I'm just drawn to the egg color... Maybe I should get a RIR because they are supposed to be good layers... All the little chicks are just too tempting. I'm lucky none of the IFAs have Polish because my oldest really wants one but I want good egg layers.

I would get the RIR if you want good eggs, I have 2 FBCM and they didn't start laying till 8 months, my Cuckoo Maran started at 10 months. But I do almost get an egg from them every day. I would say at least 5 a week. My RIR started at 4 1/2 months, and I get one every day.

Wendy here is our cookie booth that we did today, My Co-leader totally went over board. She didn't like my idea of keeping it simple with just a few posters. So she went a little nuts. Oh well, the girls had tons of fun. We made troop shirts and costumes too. She is also sewing a table cloth, and I have wooden chalkboard banner to hang from our Easy Up :D

With 2 of my Scouts, neither is my daughter

Ok, no one get upset with me here...I think the Black Marans look just like the Black sex link, only the sex link doesn't have feathered legs/feet. The marans doesn't lay as well as a Black Sex Link, and I am one to want the eggs...except for the occasional different hen out there. I only have 5 laying hens right now, and the only one that can be considered different, is my EE. She is beautiful. Everyone that see's her does an audible gasp, then .. wow!
I had a marans..a couple of different times, maybe just a fluke, but both were not nice hens. Very bossy and picky to the others. As in, really picked on them, feathers flying. I'm sure you that have them are having a whole different experience..or you wouldn't have them. :)
I love the RIR! And the leghorn. Sweetest birds the leghorns. I have to have one or two in the yard. They are skittish at first, then once they start laying...and this happens every single time, they are right there when you come out the door. Right under foot. Squat for you..even when you least expect it..have to be careful not to step on them, and, they will eat right out of your hand. Little Miss Piggys!

Have to say also, I love that white tail that sits straight up, and looks like it a rudder helping them around. I also love the Red Sex Links. Eggs every day! From all of these hens I have now. My EE hasn't stopped laying from the first day she started, and it's been two weeks. Now crossing fingers she won't go broody on me .. knocking on wood. My DH really likes her and the leghorns too.

Great booth Karen, wow! Ahhhh memories of girl scouts. I had some fun times with my little Daisy/Brownie. I tried the cookie manager job, that memory is not as fun lol.

Marans--Cynthia, why not? That is kind of how I am with Orps and Wyandottes, not sure why though, just not really interested. Is it just a personality thing or plumage thing? I love my Marans hens disposition--they are as docile as can be--, not as fancy in the coloring as some other breeds for sure. I think my favorite thing about them though besides the obvious dark eggs, is the egg size. They seem to lay the biggest eggs. However, not very many. They take plenty of breaks, more than I would like. So I like to keep a few, but not too many, I think the feed conversion ratio on them must be horrendous due to them being bigger birds, and holding out on eggs so frequently. Funny to me how much better the Olive eggers lay, the ones that come from Marans and true Ameraucanas, neither of which are great layers....? go figure. Other than their little broody fits, the OE's seem to end up my better layers.

Kimmy--the Marans I have gotten at feed stores (7 so far, all cuckoo) have not laid dark eggs at all. About the same as a GSL. I did get a FBCM from chicken stock, the free chicks (I think he gets them at cackle?) and it did not lay dark at all either. So I concluded I better stick with the privately bred ones.

ETA--Cynthia, I see your answer there! Typed mine at the same time. Makes sense :) Leghorns--never had one, but the SBEL's from the leghorns are sure always sweet. Won't get out of my way when I a m walking, I have stepped on them a few times, they just hang around my feet !
