Utah!

This is my first post but I've been using BYC for a couple of years now, excellent forum.

I just finished my first hatch and it didn't go so well. I only was able to successfully hatch one egg out of 18. I think my humidity was to low. I'm ready for another shot.

I ordered some eggs from Texas and shipping went well but, they were shipped eggs. When I ordered them I couldn't find any Utah breeders to get some fertile eggs from. I'd like to get some eggs that are local that I can pick up instead of ship them. I'm living in Heber and would like to find someone within an hour drive time. I've found some breeders on KSL but I thought I'd check on here to see if I can get a Utahn and a BYCer! I'm not picky on the breed other than I want good layers.

So, does anyone have some eggs I can hatch?

Heber? Well, there are quite a few on here that have fertile eggs. Sorry, I'm not one of them! I wish! I do have a cockerel RIR that is ready to crow any day, and I will be trying out a collar for him. I'm like you, want some eggs that I can hatch from closer to home. I just had one Barred Rock chick hatch from shipped eggs. I usually do a lot better than that, but it does happen every now and again. Put up an ISO on KSL if you haven't already. See who's close by.

Sundance, isn't your marans from me? I thought we did some trades, but maybe not.

Feed: I get mine from Cache Commodities in Ogden. 18% layer is around $13 for a 50 lb bag. Love it there. As an extra wonderful bonus, they do not sell anything other than feed. So, no temptation of chicks!

Welcome, Icthys!! I have lots of fertile eggs that will produce mutts. My only purebred eggs are spoken for for a couple months. Some of the eggs will be olive eggers, and they all will be french black copper marans cross. I live in Davis county, but am in Salt Lake at least once a week and am happy to meet.

Silly, we'll get together some night, and I'll make you a drink. Maybe a celebratory "Cookies are done!" party.

Wendy I hope I survive tomorrow cookie pickup. HeHe, first year ever doing cookies, first time doing Girl Scouts, first time being a troop leader and I now have 18 girls, Daisys-Cadettes. I have 334 cases of cookies that I need to pickup tomorrow, and only have 1 parent out of 10 registered in the troop that even offered to come help me with pickup. Can you say I'm a little stressed out about that. My celebration will be gettting eggs from you on Saturday, unless I'm stuck selling cookies since its the last weekend. But I have to set them according to the rules at noon my time on March 29th, so that might not be happening right at noon. But we will see. :D

Welcome Icthys... My first hatch I only had 4 develop, 2 quit before lockdown, and then the 2 that I though was good to go never hatched. My 2nd hatch went much better. I did start out with like 25 eggs, but was then cut down to 20 after 7 days. I had 4 that I never could see into, and all 4 never hatched, so I have no idea if they were even fertile. But I did have 12 hatch out of 15 that I knew were good at lockdown. So that was so much better.

I'm going to be getting eggs from Wendy (Sphinx) at the end of the month, if your still looking I can pick up some and bring them back down and meet you in Orem with them. I'm in Cedar Hills, so I would be much closer for you then going up to Davis County

Silly thanks for the link. Getting closer, not quite the right Mister Rooster though!

Icthys, you might check with Desert Springs to see what she has. She's in Duchesne and breeds several kinds of chickens. She used to have other types of fowl, too. Not sure what all she's still breeding.

On feed, I bounce around as to which store I buy layer feed, all flock, or game bird feed from. I mix it with whole grains such as wheat and the corn/barley/molasses mixture that's for horses.

And when it comes to chickens with great personalities, I'm a big fan of the Plymouth Rocks. My BR x Dominique hen has always been very friendly and curious. I can pick her up and hold her and pet her, and she will actually groom me for any specks she thinks she sees. I have two pullets that are BR barnyard mixes, and they've been pretty friendly, too. One greets me at the gate and loves to have attention, and the other follows me around the yard and chats. For looks, I love the Icelandic breed. They have the high rudder tails Cynthia was talking about, and they come in so many colors. There are so many breeds that I love the looks of, though.

Here is my white leghorn mix. I'm thinking its crossed with an EE it has green skin and green legs. At least that's what Cynthia says. It hasn't started laying yet but close I hope it's a greenish egg.
