This is one shot of the hen house. It is not finished but at the good enough stage. We plan on increasing the run size and adding electricity with accessories.
This one islooking t the nesting boxes from the inside. The picture is old and Ive added a few things to make the boxes a little more discrete but its a good idea to what it mostly looks like.
I know this a shot in the dark- but does anyone know of a place or area to rent in or near byish to utah county that it is acceptable to have a rooster at? My rent limit is 700 and it needs to be a two bed at least, thanks
My husband just added that last end part last week. I've just had the run up to where you can see the middle posts. I love having the extra running room, will be great for winter. You can see in the back a place I have for small pullets, I call it the nursery...
My husband also built me this pen. I had some bantams in it, but now let my one girl I kept run with the others..so want to use this one for when I have a hen go broody..I know where to get some eggs.
I haven't experienced a mama hen yet..want to.
Hey Jersey, just noticed..there's that little buff I got from you...still...a sweetheart!! I call her honey, real original ey? The original part comes in when I call her honey bunches of oats, or just honey bucket.
Where is every body?? Are you all out there enjoying the last of the nice weather? Supposed to drop to the mid and high 50's last I heard, by next weekend.
Will be getting the electric water bowl out before I know it, and, the warm light. Hope I don't have to do that too soon!
i am alive, just had some major back pain as of late so i have not been able to do much. the girls are doing great and my welsummer is checking out the nest boxes today so we may be seeing her first egg soon
i got a bale of straw so i put it in the run and the girls are pecking at it to get what wheat they can out of it and i love it because it cuts down on the feed they eat and keeps them busy. i also have a neighbor who goes all out decorating for halloween and when its over she will give me 5 more bales of straw
its a great time of year for chickens with all the free straw and pumpkins that people throw out, i have even been payed in the past to take away their straw after they are done with it so that may be an idea for anyone who uses it for chickens
Question for ya'll. I have 3 roosters that I have let free range 24/7 (but I've provided feed & water as well). I have a large roof overhang from the barn that now is over the girls dayrun (which is a large dog run, covered with netting). The roosters fly up into the rafters of this overhang. It is not insulated but provides wind shelter and protection fm all predators (but racoons, but something killed them off).
My question is... is this enough protection for the roosters during the winter or could they freeze to death? Keep in mind I'm in the mountains and we get to -25 for a week plus at the worst.
I don't have the heart to kill them and don't want them to freeze dead either. (They are banties and no one wanted them earlier in the year for meat). They lost buddies to hawks so they are pretty hawk savy.

-25?! Wow, banties?? That is rough on them. They may need some heat. Is there any way to get some kind of warm bulb out to them? I have a looong cord going out to my chicken coop...look back up to where my pictures are. It is now stretched out and ready, in case we get hit with real cold..but, I don't use the heat lamp until it hits the 20's. I also have some banties, hens only. If you had a banty hen you wanted to part with, I would take it. Can't take roosters.
Anyway....
Even if they are the smaller combed chicken..that is pretty cold! Where are you?
