Utah!

My chicks are 4 wks and have been outside for 2 weeks. The third week in the house brooder they had no heat unless it got cold at night. Granted I have 10 that can help with body heat. Outside they are in the "sunroom" of my coop (clear corrugated plastic). It prevent small chicks fm escaping and keeps they dry/wind proof. I have a tire w/shavings in there and a brooder light above it w/70 watt bulb. The temp dropped to 11 two nights ago and all are fine.

I never go by temp and ditched the thermometer years ago. I just listen and watch the chicks - they'll tell you how much heat they need. I've also found this cuts down on pasty butt (almost non-existant).

Yours will catch up fast!

I'm considering trading my "Possible roos" for pullets if anyone is interested. I keep hoping they arent but I just sense they are. Their combs are starting to raise up, and widen while the others still look small and girly. It makes me really sad because one is my only splash (one of my fav) and the other is white. Both are super fluffy, nice quality bearded silkies. Tons of fluff on head, cheeks, and feet. I dont want to just give them up without replacement though cause I think that would just make it harder but thought if someone was looking for some good quality bearded silkie roos for breeding and had any young bearded pullets they'd be interested in trading for them, let me know. Im pretty much open for all colors but really want a splash back. I also would love a partridge, paint, or black. If there's any interest let me know. These pics were taken last week.

Yeah but its chase hatchery on KSL and they have been having lots of sick and dying chicks

I have been tempted to go look (yeah that means buy usually lol) at the cream legbars (and a goose) but knowing there are no refunds that's just too much money to risk. I also don't want to bring back to my flock whatever is roaming there.

My littles are only five days old. I've had my brooder meticulously kept at 90-95 degrees but it seems too hot. After reading Madchicken's posts about only using a heat lamp for 2 weeks I thought I'd try lowering my temp a bit. Holy cow! I have different chicks! They are so much more active and happy!

I agree 100%. The chicks will tell you what they need! Just like with human babies! Lol! You can read every book published on parenting ( which I did pre-kids and pre-chicks) but you don't know anything until you give it a go! :)

Great info, im sure thats the reason then why my babies arent feathering faster then is im babying them. Im such a worry wart when it comes to them being too cold. I keep worrying about the time they have to go outside for good. I dont want to loose any of them. I bet if I reduced their heat or even just took it away since they are still in the house then they'd fill out much faster. This might sound dumb but is a 70 watt bulb just an ordinary bulb in your house? I've never observed what those were, so thought i'd ask. If not, can I just find one at walmart?

Just a normal light bulb that I have in a regular reptile clamp light. After they are 4 weeks old, I usually turn it off during the day and they only have it at night.

So I decided to let the babies out of the grow out pen this morning since all the other girls are on the other side of the house in the grass free ranging, and they won't even come out of the coop. They just keep peaking out like where did the fence go. Little wimps. While I was changing out water, my NN and EE came to see what I was doing, and just went right in the baby coop. I was expecting them to all come flying out or hear screams of fighting, nope. The big hens just jumped right back out after a minute and went on their way. So maybe they are ready to go with the main flock. They are 10 weeks old and have been outside with the big girls in the middle of their run for about 4 weeks. I will probably keep them in their little coop for the rest of the week, and just let them out all day, and try this weekend. Just nervous with my White Silkie and the the Serama/Silkie Mix. That Serama mix is so tiny. I would probably lock them up for the night in the shipping crate coop till they get about 3 months old though. I would love to kick them out so the Hatch Along chicks can go out in the sun shine when its about 70 degree's. Yes Luvmysilkies, I would put out my 2 week old chicks outside in the sun if it was about 70 degrees with a coop for shelter. I won't keep them outside overnight, just during the warmth of the day. I would keep an eye on them, and if they seemed cold I would bring the back in, but usually they are trying to find shade from the sun. So I don't worry all too much.

Haha totally agreed! I've been learning alot. If I hatch my own babies someday I feel like I will know everything really well by then :)

This is the first time I have added some grass in the brooder to entertain chicks. It works like a charm. Funny thing is I guess a big juicy caterpillar had been hiding in the roots because yesterday during dinner I hear this commotion coming from the brooder. I got worried and ran over to check on them and one of the chicks had the worm in its beak and was running around sqwaking that it had a prize!! The adults do this like crazy but I didn't think week old babies would. It made me laugh so hard when two got a hold of each end and started to play tug o war! Chicks are so fun!

21 silkie babies! Out of 26 that went into lock down. The best I've done with silkies in a long time. Blacks, blues, and I think some of the blues are splash. At least that's what I am hoping.
When they are ready, I will be selling the black one for sure, and I will see which blues I will keep, Lisa, one of these blues belong to you if you want..unless you are waiting on the others to hatch. They are due in 2 days..I was thinking tomorrow, but I was off..but if they do like this hatch, could have some babies tomorrow. BBS and I have tiny little paint eggs in there. I worry about those, they are so tiny. :/
