Utah!

I have had a couple and saved them when I found them early enough. Deep, warm bath...and ya kinda gotta "dig". Not fun, but I'll do it everytime if it'll help save my girl. I once retrieved an egg that was very weird, almost petrified and misformed. I have a friend in Delta who I called the first time, she said you use the tub and get the water above their back. It took above 1/2 hr each time, and then i just towel dried, then blowdried. I keep the bathroom door closed to keep it warm. Then they live in a dog crate in the kitchen until they lay an egg or appear recovered.

I helped my neighbor who had hers in the washroom sink but she lost it. No clue if the sink or tub made the difference but my girls seemed less stressed and not trapped acting.

My girls seemed to appreciate the help and didn't fight it at all. Good luck! Sure hope you can save her.

Can you explain DIG a little more. I went in there and I am pretty sure I felt an egg with the one finger I used.
It has been overnight at this point since I "think" I discovered there was a problem. She seems perfectly fine otherwise and at this point, has simply pooped all over herself because of her enclosure. So I need to wash her again and I will work on her again. I am putting her into an 18 gallon tote filled with warm water.

Are you planning on buying a puppy from them?  I used to help run the Labrador Rescue, and I would recommend looking for another kennel.  They do a few things right, as they do say they check their dogs for hips, and eye certs.  But their dogs are not breed standard, and we have seen a few with issues.  If you are looking just for a family pet, you would probably find a better quality lab through a rescue group or even animal shelter.  But if your wanting papers, I can ask around to a few people at my kennel club to see if they can recommend anyone else.

Best of luck.

Hm. Thanks. I probably won't get a dog for a few years, but I am starting my research now as to make an educated decision. I just love the look of their labs. The white broad chest and square head are very appealing to me! Good info to jot down

What would cache valleyites think of sponsoring a 'tour de coop' this fall? A tour de coop is where you get four or five people to be hosts, and others do a scavenger hunt type thing as a group stopping at the different coops to learn something new about chicken raising and to get new ideas for your own flock... Eh?! Would anyone else be on?

Got my chickens new waterer tonight! I have been wanting to try one of these for a while. I think the guy did a great job making it for me. What do you think? I had him make it so that I could put it into the corner of the run. I showed the girls how to use it and so far the older ones seem to have caught right on! Woo hoo! But the littler ones, are still avoiding it. I hope that the older ones will help them learn, and explore it more tomorrow. Im only a little nervous because it get soo super hot very quick so I want to be sure the little ones will pick it up right away. Cause I read that you should take away any other water buckets so that they learn to use it faster, and im afraid if I put a bowl back in there it'll set them all back. One of the little ones was trying a little bit so its really only the 3 youngest that I havent seen go to it yet. I have shown all of them individually, but so far only the older ones are interested in it on their own. They seem to have figured it out quick. It was fun sitting there watching them figure it out and get eachother interested, its soo cute lol. I have it right where the bowl used to be and once they get the hang of it, ill set it into the corner. Have any of you tried one of these yet?

How common does this happen? Whats the chances I could encounter this among 8 silkie hens? I am already nervous about dealing with the whole "broody" hen thing, but now the chance of eggs backing up to? I fear I would loose then hen before i'd figure out which one is not laying. Whats next..? How scary :s

It seems to occur more with the high-ratio layer breeds, but I think it can happen to almost any hen, if they are unlucky enough. I just lost my Leghorn to it last month.

@Iluvmysilkies

That is an very interesting concept for placing a waterer. How many nipples did you use on it, and am I correct in thinking that there are not any on the 'back side?'

On the Cache Valley coop tour, I suppose that might be fun, but it would seem that I am always under construction of some kind. So always in a mess…

Hope everyone had a nice 24th of July,

RJ

If I remember right (it's been a couple years), I "went in" an egg length, maybe a tad more. I figured I was loosing her so I went as deep as I dared without hurting her (I do have small hands, dunno if I'd hv my husband try it...not that he would haha). Yoke/shell spills out, even the time the one hen had that prehistoric looking egg stuck.

If she's fine acting now, you may have helped her already. If she's goes back, I really would try the full bathtub thing. I dunno why but I think it helps. I just sanitize it big time when done.

Sounds like you caught her early. When I've lost a hen it's been when I've had the kids collecting eggs cause of work. They don't know "coop nuance" LOL.

Cynthia: SO glad to read the good news!!

So true about the construction thing. I feel ya! I just think it would be fun to see some other coops and get to know people a bit better! It could even help people in choosing their chick plans foe next spring by looking at some new breeds.
