Utah!

Anyone,

Do we know a vet near Ogden/ Layton etc that works with chickens?

I fear one of my girls is egg bound. I have done everything on a very helpful webpage.... but no egg is appearing. I am certain I can feel the egg in there.... but I can't get it out myself. I don't know if I am too afraid.

I have done bath, calcium supplement, electrolytes, massaging, etc.
She is in a cat taxi in the house.

Help!

I have not had any survive this yet...had 3 now. We ended up putting 2 down, and another did not make it to that point...the old methods I have read about and tried---oiling the vent, warm batch, nothing has worked for me. I did see on her someone else was able to fix one of theirs...can't remember who--so I know it is possible!

Briana...it is when the egg won't pass, and they get backed up...either due to a broken egg, an egg that is too large or turned wrong, they can't pass it and sometimes continue to produce eggs, and just get plain backed up. It can get really gross. Sorry Erykah to hear about her, I hope you are able to help her out!

Amanda---thank you so much for waiting so long for me at our meeting spot, sorry! The traffic was just awful, we were so late to our concert, it was starting when we got there. I hated making you wait while you were doing me such a huge favor, sorry! I got your message, it was after the concert and really late so I will text you back in the morning! That chick is really pretty, it was hard to decide if I was strong enough to let her go lol, but the more I let go the better....over run with birds (again!)

Thanks again for your help! I am headed off to the land of no internet and cell phone service for a couple days, after about noon tomorrow. Will be back to check up on y'all soon!

Cynthia--I am soooooo grateful you have good news about Lisa. Thank goodness! I have been so worried, and am so happy for you that you have your sister back!

Help!

I have had a couple and saved them when I found them early enough. Deep, warm bath...and ya kinda gotta "dig". Not fun, but I'll do it everytime if it'll help save my girl. I once retrieved an egg that was very weird, almost petrified and misformed. I have a friend in Delta who I called the first time, she said you use the tub and get the water above their back. It took above 1/2 hr each time, and then i just towel dried, then blowdried. I keep the bathroom door closed to keep it warm. Then they live in a dog crate in the kitchen until they lay an egg or appear recovered.

I helped my neighbor who had hers in the washroom sink but she lost it. No clue if the sink or tub made the difference but my girls seemed less stressed and not trapped acting.

My girls seemed to appreciate the help and didn't fight it at all. Good luck! Sure hope you can save her.

So does that mean I need to pick up Iluvs Silkie Chick on Saturday?

Ditto. Glad Lisa is ok! Tell her all your chicken friends are praying for her!!!

Has anyone heard of Kanosh Labradors here in Utah?

Are you planning on buying a puppy from them? I used to help run the Labrador Rescue, and I would recommend looking for another kennel. They do a few things right, as they do say they check their dogs for hips, and eye certs. But their dogs are not breed standard, and we have seen a few with issues. If you are looking just for a family pet, you would probably find a better quality lab through a rescue group or even animal shelter. But if your wanting papers, I can ask around to a few people at my kennel club to see if they can recommend anyone else.

Best of luck.

How common does this happen? Whats the chances I could encounter this among 8 silkie hens? I am already nervous about dealing with the whole "broody" hen thing, but now the chance of eggs backing up to? I fear I would loose then hen before i'd figure out which one is not laying. Whats next..? How scary :s

It is Ruby- You used to call her Rudy :-(

I did everything last night, but I don't know if we have had her egg yet. I put her in a cat carrier overnight and she did not lay the egg. But she was so stressed that I simply let her out and she is running around just fine now. And she is no longer open mouth breathing either.
A few of the girls went broody again, and when that happens the production in our whole coop goes down.
