Utah!

It seems like the chicks I have raised longer in my garage brooders are sweeter...the earlier they go outside the less they interact with the humans and they become less friendly. The longer they are being babied the more they seem to like the people. Just something I have noticed. Along with more chicken dust and bad smells in the garage.....I don't know if it is worth it haha :D
Amen to that. I have raised several sets of brooder chicks and two sets of broody chicks. The brooder chicks are much sweeter and friendly.
I think those first few days are pivotal in chick to human relationships. You have probably heard of imprinting where an animal sees another animal or human as its mother/leader. If you can baby the chicks and spend time with them at the beginning, you'll probably have a higher chance of them being friendly as they get older. Just my three cents ;).

Yep, totally agree ;) I try to keep all my babies in the house or garage for as long as possible just for that reason. I'll be breeding & selling paint silkies in the spring/summer. Holler if your interested. You'll find my ads on ksl to. :)

one of the things i love about getting chickens from people on here is its fun to have people that know your birds. it kinda ties us all together. and best of all you get birds that were well loved and taken care of. i mean dont get me wrong ifa and cal ranch have some great chicks at times but there is just something special about getting them from friends. and you can get much higher quality birds from people here too, like you will see some show quality birds and such. and you can find a lot more rare breeds

Truthfully spoken! :D I decided from day one that I wanted a plain ol' black Wyandotte. I ended up getting her from Lisa (La Casa) and I love her dearly. She is even more special to me because she's from a friend. I have had other birds like that, too.

Hello, I was looking to purchase some new baby chicks in the Spring. Around March or April. I live in Salt Lake city and go to the IFA at 2100 S. Does anyone have bad reviews with the chicks there? I also wanted to know if they had Silkies and Buff Orpingtons. I am going for more docile breeds. Thanks!

I think most of us have purchased from IFA but that time of year there will be breeders on this thread that have chicks available. much better idea than IFA or anyother hatchery

I agree. Here in Logan, the week before St patrick's Day was the last week a lot of the more unique breeds were ordered in. I never saw some of them again after that at the IFA here.

FYI.....I will have Olive Eggers and Marans. If my rooster starts getting busy again here soon

I am also trying to get some SBELs from Idaho to hatch in a month or so, I need to get ahold of Birdguy.

I WANT SOME SBEL CHICKS WHEN THEY ARE HATCHED. SAVE SOME FOR ME

I have some silkie/sizzle right now. Will watch them for a bit, to see which ones I want to keep, dang, can't keep them all! I like selling a couple at a time so that they have each other, won't feel lonely in a new flock. Works well.
I have some older pullets, that look to be Wesummer/EE mix. That is what this friend of mine has, one EE roo, and a few different hens, but, mostly Welsummer, and a few Olive Eggers..on my, those Olive eggs I got from her were beautiful..all three hatched. Two girls one boy. I was lucky, but I won't be keeping both girls. I have to choose. :/

The thing I try and make sure of when buying from Cal Ranch or IFA is..that I get the chicks when they JUST come in. Not much handling by other people. I prefer Cal Ranch over IFA too..at least here in Spanish Fork. I will go for the egg layers there. I love the Sex Links and the Leghorns. :) If I luck out and show up when they have NN's or silkies..I have to look..oh, and I love love bantam cochins. :D

Just to be clear, if I were to get the chicks from IFA say mid-February, would there be the breeds I'm looking for? (Silkies and buff orps) If not, I'd rather buy from people on this thread :p I will most likely end up doing that anyway.

I need to stop following this thread, with all this talk about chicks.... Unless of course anyone is breeding austrlorps... I could make room for two more of those... And I may be able to make room for a maran or two... And a favorelle... ;) But seriously the wiser thing would be to stop following you all. I'm going to get in trouble.
