Utah!

Lisa you are great to help her out. It's so hard. I remember the first ..more than a few times I've had to cull. Still, very hard to do, especially if you think it was going to make it. So glad this last little silkie I had to feed for a while made it. She so dang cute. I will be keeping her for a while.

I have a rooster I rescued (the one with the collar) who has crooked toes. The middle on both feet is curved inward. He can still hop into the trees and roost. He scratches and mates fine. He's never acted like it bothers him but I never tried to correct it either.

It is pretty easy to fix as a chick but I have not tried as an adult. Seems like that would be tough because they are not as flexible. I got some pure Ameraucanas from a lady In Montana and they all had crooked toes...that was another story, not a happy camper because they were ordered as adult birds and given to me in a box, did not notice the toes, after driving hours to get back home I realized the toes were all messed up and she said she thought it happened on the ride home....ummmm, what? Did not get birds there after that, despite the pretty blue eggs, I found someone a little closer. I believe that was a genetic issue. A guy in Idaho falls also got some with crooked toes from the same place :/ I was sure not to use them for any sort of breeding llike RJ said...just not good chicken husbandry to mess with those as breeding stock.

How sad poor guys. Had I got him when he was a baby I probably would have tried but I got him when he was two months or so old. I figured he had made it this far I didn't need to go changing his toes when he had them figured out.

Thank you for taking her, Lisa. I really appreciate it. We did call the IFA we got our chicks from today but were passed around between a couple people before they took my name and number and I was told the chick lady would get back to me on Wed. I couldn't let her go that much longer. The other chicks were picking on her more and more each day and it looked like one did get the tip of her tongue today. :(

Glad to help. Hugs to that cute daughter she was so brave <3 !

The eggstra Houdans and white faced Spanish are spoken for :D

Hatching some Showgirl/Silkies/frizzle shizzle stuff on Thursday if anyone is interested. I have a few barnyard mix too in this batch, tan egger moms/choc egger daddy.

Every Cynthia baby is lucky to have her as momma <3

IPick, so very sorry about your chicky. I have had to cull a couple of babies before that were sick and obviously hurting or struggling. It's very hard to do, but it is better in the end knowing they won't suffer anymore. *hugs*

All of my eggs are dead, except for one. I think you're right, Lisa - it has to be my incubator. I've been fighting with it to keep steady temps for the last few days, and it always drops or spikes. I am wondering if I should just chuck it at this point. That's 25 eggs dead in 2 weeks. Gah.

Can I please have a hug?

Bummer! And no broodies!?!?! That stinks. I would love to incubate some for you in the future. I'll be a good surrogate.

For you Red!!
:hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs

I soooo feel your pain. Dang! I am sorry. Maybe you will get a broody hen?

Here is something interesting....the one I just got at Cal Ranch has a digital readout on it and is little giant brand. The old one is Farm Innovators. I figured the digital readout was a farse, like all other thermometers on styro bators, but it was miraculously dead on and seems steady so far. This is only a two day period trial so far so I am remaining cautiously optimistic. We'll see. My other still air runs ok with my own thermometer, but the problem is it will just quit....like randomly short out once or twice during the three week period. If it happens during the day it is ok and I notice, but I hope it never happens in the night. What a piece! Then the third one that Donna gave me, a forced air runs pretty good but slowly climbs every few days and I have to turn it down constantly. :/

Can somebody make one that works already? (I know I know Brinsea has this covered but dang it to the pricetag for the big ones!) Speaking of Brinsea, I really really REALLY want the thingamajig that replaces a brooder light, the little heated tray that they cuddle under. Liz has one and I am uber jealous.

Random thoughts of a chicken addict.
