Does anyone know if the egg color passes through the dad or mom? I have a n orpington crossed with golden cuckoo maran hen. I have a little rooster up and coming

I did a little research in my book 21st Century Poultry Breeding. It says "The general consensus is that to improve the colour of a dark egg strain, you should always breed from the females who lay the darkest eggs (and their sons)."

Sounds like they think it comes from the hen.

Oh. My. Sussex!

I LOVVVVE THEM! This is my first year with them, and they are by far my favorite breed--personality and looks. They are beautiful with their deep mahogany color and vibrant black and white spots.

What I love most is their dog-like temperament. Right when I open the gate they come running to my feet, looking up at me waiting to be petted. They love having me stroke their back! Then as I walk in the coop, I have to literally move them with my feet so I can walk.

This has been the only breed that lets my little 20 month old walk right up to them and pet them. They LOVE the attention.

I would consider them the Labs of the chicken world.

May have to give them a try one of these days. Assuming you have the Speckled variety?
