Utah!

That little frizzle is adorable. I can't tell yet.

Maybe I'm just being harsh because one of the employees was very mean to our puppy. I can let go of a great many things, but I draw the line at being rude to me or my animals.

Thats completely uncalled for.

So the wattles are little but they are red. Still looking like a pullet? Right? Please let this chick be a girl... Sorry I couldn't get a better picture of the wattles.

Look at this little roo monster! He's so cute.

Their beaks look like they are getting overgrown but I'm afraid I'll trim them too much. I'm going to try feeding them on some stone to see if I can get those beaks under control.
I saw on another thread that some just put a brick in there and let them do it themselves, but I don't know if that really works.

That's a good idea..or, put a flat slab of cement..like those at Walmart. buy a couple, put it around the run, they will use it to wipe their beaks clean, swiping away excess beak tip. :)

Grabbed a paver block and put it in there with them... They all ran to one side of the pen and chirped in alarm. *facepalm* Seriously chickens it's a rock.

I had taken the puppy (5 months old) with me to look at the chicks since he wasn't allowed to be home alone.
He wasn't being unruly or anything, just wandering around pulling lightly on the leash trying to look around. The employee wanted him to lay down and told him to do so. When he didn't, the employee physically pushed him to the ground and rose their voice when he would try to stand. I tried to explain that he knew the down command but only with a hand signal (he is terrible at verbal cues) but that didn't get us anywhere.
I had to call him away from the employee so I could pick him up and put him in the cart. He was so confused as to why he was being punished, he didn't know what he had done wrong.
Then I got him some frozen yogurt and he was happy again.

Anyway, lesson learned. I haven't brought any of our dogs in since.

They will get used to the block. May take a while. I know anything new can be scary to them. Too funny.

I feel your pain. I'm super paranoid about my last frizzle from them turning out to be a rooster too. I check that comb daily.

Also, when do wattles on females come in? My frizzle is getting them now and they're bright red. She is only 7 weeks. Something to be concerned about or is that normal for cochin hens? The comb is still small (nearly hidden by those curly feathers).
I'll take some pictures later if I can, but she's difficult to get nice photos of.

Suddenly buying those three extra chicks doesn't seem like it was such a bad idea, considering of the 8 chicks I have 2 are definite roosters... At least on is pint sized. He can hardly be considered a chicken at this point.

Its hard to tell. One thing I did notice was they were a bit warmer than the others every time I handled them and more social. As for comb, I had a Jersey Giant and cochin that was so red and big at about 4 weeks, they also had the biggest feet compared to the others but ended up hens. With the three ive had in the last year they were all different with comb, feathering and size, the only thing that was the same was that heat they put off and friendliness.
