Utah!

My Easter Eggers are finally laying! And a B.O. for comparison.

Those are great looking eggs!

RJ, you just can't go wrong with brinsea. I have a DIY bator but I would get a brinsea in a heartbeat. The hovabator works well too from what I have heard. Stay away from Little Giant.

Autosexing Easter Egger Project - For Sale!

I have too many projects going in too little space, so I have decided to let this project go to someone that has the time and space to work with it.

I got these eggs from Jerry Segler and the autosexing EE project he was working on. Jerry was one of the main folks that got the Ameraucanas accepted as a breed in the APA.

I have done the heavy lifting on this leg of the project. I had the eggs shipped in, hatched them out, and now they are over 8 weeks old. Jerry has picked out the 4 best from my flock to move forward with. These 4 are the chickens I have for sale. 1 cockerel and 3 pullets. They are all barred. All you need to do is take the chicks from this quartet, pick out the double barred cockerels and barred pullets and BAM! You now have a line of auto sexing Easter Eggers. Even though this mix has some strait combs all the eggs from the project are colored.

I'm selling the quartet for $65. They are in a coop now and off of artificial heat, they will be zero extra maintenance through the winter and should begin laying in Nov. You could have autosexing EEs by spring. You can ask $5 a chick for sexed female chicks on KSL, maybe more. Once you have a double barred cockerel you can breed them back to these pullets and the chicks will be autosexed.

PM me if you are interested.

Thank you Ace and Sidewing… I'm in that chicken funk we all seem to endure from time to time. It might pass, but I don't hope so. Chickens are fun for the body and the soul, keep the mind working late at night.

Sidewing your project looks to be interesting, I hope someone picks it up.

Nice warm summer day around these parts, without that awful smoke we endured last week.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

I am a little obsessed with them...I keep looking at the ones on the counter, may not be able to crack them, thinking I will blow them out. They are just so tiny and blue and cute. Now I may have to get a EE cockerel and an abovementioned incubator.....OMG you people are contagious!

okay folks, I've listed my two roos on KSL, but if someone would like them on here, I am willing to give you a REALLY good deal ;) (free)

(only problem is, with a newborn, I will not be able to travel)

these pics were taken today

Baby Ruth - Barnevelder 2 - 3 mo old

Rocky - Salmon Faverolle x ee mix 3 - 4 mo old

(I promise, this will be the last time I post them on the thread ;) hehe)

My broody cochin has decided she is done sitting on eggs. She's hatched 4 beautiful chicks, a white one, a chipmunky one, a tortoiseshell one, and a black one from my shipped eggs. She took the chicks off the nest today to go visit the feeder.

There are two eggs left unhatched. I don't think they're going to hatch, but I stuck them under my other broody just in case.

Here's a picture of the adorable white silkie my broody hatched on Friday:

I can't wait to see how it grows.

Here's another one of the chicks. It definitely has silkie in it, but anyone have a guess what color it will end up? I've never seen a chick with this sort of tortoiseshell coloring:

The other chicks, because why not?

I wonder what brand or type Lisa uses? Perhaps she will chime in with her preference and or her thoughts regarding same. It was hot and not pleasant in the afternoon up here in Cache Valley today. Dog Days are soon coming to an end, me and my birds will be thankful to have made it another year. Anyone have bird loss or trouble due to the heat thus far this year? I am looking forward to the cooler weather in order to try and finish up some coop projects and such.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

RJ--I have three, all came from CAL ranch. The most recent one I bought ...I hate it so bad. It is different, it is a Farm Innovators, it does not have the heating element that goes around the perimeter of the lid, it just has a small heated element in the center. I liked it at first, humidity stays awesome, but soon learned that it only stayed warm in one spot under the heat plate and the eggs toward the outside were 5 degrees cooler! I don't use that one anymore unless I need extra room at the last day of lockdown, and I can bunch some in the center.

The other two are a few years old, Cal Ranch styrobators....I have a still air, and a forced air...They both keep temps about the same, the still air has better luck at lockdown keeping the humidity on track. However, I really want to get a nice upgraded incubator, I have gotten to where I can get decent hatches in these, but never as good as I have seen Ace, Sphinx, and Ipick with their mini Brinsea, However, I need one that holds more than 7 eggs, so dilemma.....Red got that Brinsea this year that holds 20 or so, and she had a heck of a time with it...so not sure if the bigger Brinsea is that great, that is the only one I have seen someone try and give us feedback on. Lizcar on here has a coolerbator, her hubby made from an old coleman cooler, and she hatches my eggs half the time because she can get so many more chicks from my eggs than I can. I think on average I get 50-60 percent, she gets more like 80-90. I love it when she agrees to hatch eggs for me, I keep thinking we will make one like hers and have not had the time. So, my incubator, is Liz...lately anyway, haha :D Good luck on what you decide, if you get one be sure to let us know what you think.

PS... I am not hatching right now and would be glad to lend you a styrobator (or both, or all three to compare!) to play with and see what you think!
