@newmarch2014 at what age did your Easter eggers start laying? I'm still waiting on mine....

@RJSorensen I have the hovabator still air styrofoam incubator. My husband added a cpu fan to it, so it isn't still air any more. It seems to hold its temperature pretty well. One thermometer says 99 and the other 100, so I figure that means it's 99.5. I haven't had to deal with humidity much since my basement is about the right humidity. I like the incubator so far, but this is my first hatch with it, so I'll let you know.

You folks are just great… do you know that. My kind thanks for your input and thoughts. I picked up today (after church) a nice blue ribbon pair of OEGB SDW's from the recent Box Elder county fair. So I have my first non-hatchery Bantum's. I might try to hatch a few eggs from this pair to see what they make, after I figure out how and with what to do said hatching. It is kind of exciting to get started on what I hope to be a fun, rewarding and entertaining project. Perhaps I can get some other birds at the upcoming fall show and auction at Farmington in October.

A question for the 'Sages' found here about… how long does a hen need to be away from a rooster, to ensure the matings are true? I do not want BB Red chicks popping out of my SDW eggs. I guess I'll have to do a cram study on all things relating to hatching and etc. A fun hobby this is and a tad tough at times, seems, at least for me, that I am pushed from time to time. But as long as it stays fun, I believe I will continue to persevere. Would not want this as a job, but love it as a hobby. The new roos name is J.D. for Johnny Depp, he is black and white and all pirate looking. Plus we like, or seem to like, the name of John in our crowing fowl.

I did not know Red had trouble with her yellow Brinsea. I had hoped after the 'deathbator' thing hatching was going better for her. This obsession will make you stay up late and pull your hair out! And if it is not one thing, well it is another… but I love it nonetheless. As I suppose do most if not all of you here in the Utah thread. If there is a hatching rules post/listing here on BYC or other that someone could point me towards without too much trouble, I would publicly thank you.

I am not sure that men are meant to hatch. It just seems mystical or magical and not a place for men. I am good with the broody hens that have been parading a constant stream of little bantam chicks into the yard this summer, but to purpose hatch selected eggs just seems… well I suppose I just have to get over it and pay my dues and learn, one egg at a time as did those of you whom are good and or doing it.

Exciting times and I might just be able to get my OWN fall chicks this year.

My kind thank you to all of you here and your help suggestions and warnings, a very nice thread indeed.

Best to all and your birds/flocks,

RJ

Seems like Red did get it working ok...and didn't like it so much at first....never heard her rave about it so it would be good to know what her thoughts are on it now, maybe things improved quite a bit from when she first tried it. I also have considered getting one of the bigger Brinseas...@RedIII let us know what you think when you get a minute :D Anybody else on here tried the Octo or one of the bigger brinseas? I love the little chick heater, no light bulbs, Liz has one and I swear I am going to get myself one by next spring :D

RJ, I have read that a full month is for sure, but 2 weeks is kind of the border/minimum for ensuring "Who is the Daddy". I've had no surprises when waiting the full month.

It sure sounds like a fun project, those OEGB are really cool looking :D What a score on the ribbon winners! Good Luck! (You got this, you can DO it!) Haha :highfive:

Yesterday the chickens and I did a little photo shoot for the calendar contest and to get critiqued on the Speckled Sussex thread. Well, our little girl decided that she wanted in on the action. Happy Monday all!

i ether have a hidden rooster out there or a hen trying to crow :( kinda wondering about my bramah, i am fairly sure she is a she but that comb kinda looks different. i guess i need to get pictures. but actually i am also thinking the crowing could be done by my welsummer. i cant tell for sure. it was not too loud but still not something i want around

How old is your Brahma questionable one?

They just started a couple days ago which put them at.....(counting on fingers) 25 weeks old. It seemed like an eternity. They did get a bit more extreme red in the face just before (literally like a week before, up till then they were what I thought was "red" but now they are a much deeper red, like my rooster, darker than my year old single comb hens) but did not squat for me and still don't (not sure if that is because we have a rooster now) they run from me like I am the chicken killing monster really.

she was hatched at the end of march. she looks like a hen to me but the comb does not look like a typical pea comb. and i cant tell for sure if she is laying eggs or not. i am fairly sure she is a girl tho but you know how it is. i am betting its the welsummer crowing or trying to crow anyway. my welsummer for sure is a girl tho is kinda manly with spurs and such lol.
