Utah!

Regarding the molt… my 16 month old hens are starting to loose feathers now, they look a little goofy to me with just a tail feather or two sticking up. My EE's are docile and very quiet, I only have the three, all were chicks in the spring and are laying pretty green eggs now. A little SDW bantam showed up this a.m. with eight little fluff balls in tow. The cuteness factor is off the chart. We have enjoyed our surprise hatches this year, this makes the forth hen to do so, and I've stopped many in my broody breaker pen. They just want to be moms so bad! I tell them they are still children themselves, but to no anvil. Such is the life of a chicken farmer.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

Quick Edit: I am looking for a few of those metal milk crates I used to see around… anyone have some spares and or know of a source for them? I find them to be quite useful in the raising of my birds. Thx!

My brain is trying to remember if I know you, are you close to Spanish Fork? I live there, and I love Leland Mills. Love the mash. If you get it wet, you have to make sure that it is eaten quickly, and not kept in a container. It will go moldy pretty quick, at least in this heat. When they have the spilled mash around their feeder, I get the hose and barely wet it down..they love it! And no waste. :)
I live in Kearns. I was fishing up at Deer Creek that morning so I thought I would stop by the mill. I dont get down that way often. I will make sure to do small batches if I wet it down.

My boys had another good year at the Box Elder Fair.

Just letting my friends here know if anybody directs a post at me I may not answer for a bit. Shoulder surgery Friday...fun stuff, but I'll be down and out for at least the week after that, maybe two. Will catch up when I am up moving around more and off the pain meds so I don't post a bunch of goofy nonsense. ;) LOL
In the meantime I will hope the rest of you are having a far more exciting and fun Labor Day Weekend! Please cross fingers that my chickens survive my DH and 15 yr old being in charge of them :cd

Here is a topside view of the days hatch… seven little OEGB and one whom we are not sure who his 'Daddy' is. Love my Silver Duckwing hens. I think them one of the finest OEGB varieties. I suppose I will have to blame "Jack" for the little odd reddish brown chick on the far right. Jack is a year old Serama and believes he is the biggest rooster on the place. I've had to put a small cowbell on a thong to his leg, to slow down his 'opportunities.' Kind of sounds like the Salvation Army bell ringers, round and about the place.

Anyway a nice day and a fun one when one of your hens brings you home a troupe of chicks. I enjoyed this as a youngster, glad to see, hear and feel it once again. Bitsy, congratulations on the new little one. Looks like a doll, might be a chicken wrangler as well. Hope your day was as pleasant as my first day of September was.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

Edit: Best wishes for Lisa and her upcoming event…

I had a dutch bantam (very similar to the OEGB's) and she was so cute... but I felt so bad, because she got tormented by the bigger chickens... so I sent her to live with FarmerBrian, and she is doing so much better there, she even is the first to come up to him, and he adores her :D

And thank you, my wee one is so cute :) but she sure is a demanding little one! :D
