Utah!

I always worry about that with kids.
I know. My kids know better, but for some reason, whenever a friend or a cousin come over (even my 14 year old cousin!) , they just want to chase the ducks. Some of my ducks are so friendly, a kid will start chasing them, so the duck will stop running. That is when they get stepped on. It is not in their nature to run from people - people are their friends.

Ok, I just 1/2 heartedly played with the idea of getting rid of my Brahma rooster awhile ago and then just it ride because he is not a problem for humans at all. I came to the decision last night though that he has to go. I was going to wait for him to calm down and get the hang of things but he is just too big for most of my girls and so to hold on while he teeters around on them while getting his "game"on he tears their feathers out of the top of their head, rips off pieces of comb and just generally has them all traumatized. If he were a smaller breed I feel like my older hens would have put him in his place but he is just so huge that they cannot do it effectively enough. It makes me sad but for the greater good of my hens he has to go. I have a friend that will send him to freezer camp but if anyone else knows of someone that would like a really decent really big rooster please tell. He is great about watching out for the hens, he calls them over for food and treats, entices them to bed when it is getting late, is generally very sweet with them except for while he bumbles around in the mating department.

If you go to Creekside, it is a $45 office visit. Make sure you ask for Dr. Orr, he seems to know a lot more about ducks, I saw a different Dr. last time I went in, and he ordered a bunch of tests I don't think Dr. Orr would have run. He has been in this field a long time, I have been bringing birds to his office (back when they were on Ft. Union) for almost 20 years. No joke. That's why it was the first place I checked when my duckling got a broken leg.
They quoted me even less than that ;-)
I have an appointment with Dr Orr. later this afternoon.
Thanks so much for the recommendation.
Now...where is that cat kennel I used to have? Im sure I put it in a safe & logical place.

I have a tall Tupper ware bin in use for car trips. I put a towel in the bottom. How much did they quote you?

So... thought I'd share/vent here... I am so frustrated at my 6 year old son.... my kids were out back playing, and the chickens were out free ranging, no big deal, they've been doing that since last year when I got my chickens. So I went to put the chickens back in (I have been forgetting some nights, because of my newborn.. I forget.) I got them put away, and I stayed out there because I'm trying to teach my younger pullets to roost, and not sleep in the nest box. Anyways, I heard a small rustle, and I thought it was just coming from inside the coop... but then I heard it again, and I looked down to my left, and noticed an upside down bucket that the kids had piled stuff on (wood blocks, sandbox toys, etc). Well, I didn't think of much, other than maybe the kids had caught a mouse under there (my cat likes to bring mice to the yard to 'play with') so, I peeked under, and noticed one of my young pullets (my favorite) under the bucket!!!

She had been in there for at least 2 hours... luckily she was no worse for wear... but man am I furious at my kiddo!

Apparently, he told my husband that he 'put Cocoa on time out' but my husband didn't think anything of it. So... yeah.. thank goodness I remembered to go put my chickens away tonight, otherwise I would have had a dead chicken under there...

AW man. Im so glad you discovered her.(them) I know I could/ probably will be crucified for this but I would put the kid under a big plastic tub for a minute and ask them how he likes that time out. Not cool dude. I wouldn't leave a kid in there long and I would'nt leave him at all, Im kind of old school parent/ terrified of raising a hitler youth kind of parent. Then I would have a long loving talk about the experience and why that is so not cool. Im sorry for your frustration.

I think it was 37.00 out the door for the initial consultation. He was very nice, professional and informative.
He said it looked like puss filled joints rather than a brake or sprain, & the swelling indicates same.
Im all ready doing pretty much everything I can for her. And I will continue to persevere.
Her extenuating condition indicates she will not winter well. This is a deal breaker. Her oil gland just does not work, she cannot effectively preen and she is not waterproof.
After she recovers. She will probably be Thanksgiving dinner.

edited to add: there are other things I could do for her but it would make her a pet and taint the rest of my flock Her eggs and her meat would no longer be appropriate to eat = according to the FDA

I nkow you've tried your best. Make her comfortable, and feed her some yummy food. You're a good Momma!

LadyIsadora, sorry about your girl :( At least you have tried to care for her and giver a good home.

Bitsy, I'm glad you found your pullet! Boy if I'd done something like that as a kid, I'd have gotten spanked and sent to my room. Hopefully your child can learn from this and things will get better, right?

Sorry that happened. I could totally see my 6 year old doing something like that. Maybe I'll have a preemptive talk.
