Utah!

I got a big portion of my brooder taken care of today.

I went to Costco's produce department and asked if they had any of the really large heavy duty cardboard bins they keep things like onions in and they had one. It is about 4 ft by 4ft and about 2 ft deep. I figured I don't really plan on needing to reuse it, it was free, and a nice size for my 7 chicks when I get them. I am planning on using the MHP brooding system I found on a thread here.

Well RedIII I may not have those Brahma eggs afterall. I will save the ones from this week if you are interested but the Rooster is going off to the processor this weekend.
He is not a bad rooster, in fact I really like him but he is just too big for most of my hens and today he really tore one of my Reds combs, my coop looked like a massacre happened. He is still maturing and I know he would probably improve his courting technique over time but his time has run out. So if someone wants a huge people safe rooster that is relatively quiet .....speak quick and he is yours.

Aw :( Sorry about your roo. Don't worry about the eggs. I can try Brahmas another time :) I so much appreciate your generosity, though! Hope your girl is okay.

Carrie, nice score!

Nice enough day, but not as nice as yesterday. I cleaned out the big girl coop today, took a couple of hours or so. I swear that I never put enough shavings down in the coops when I change out the bedding. But… I know for a fact that I put too much down in the coop, after removing it all. Do you think it average out? The hens get cranky when their nests are disturbed as in today. They are not shy about letting me know, and telling me to get along… no resting, back to work.

Well all in all a good job done, and perhaps a little over due. It was nice and dry, no damp spots and the garden will love the mixture, by spring proper. I always find a tweak or two as well that need to be accomplished, good to keep improving.

Hope all is will with you and your birds,

RJ

I know what you mean. I cleaned mine on Saturday. Ended up putting a full bale of shavings down, and now it looks light. But I am sure I won't think it is light when the time comes for me to shovel it all out of there.

cal ranch has black oil sunflower seeds on sale for like $15 for 40lbs. that is $4 off i think. also a big bag of meal worms for $20 that is $10 off :) thought i would mention it in case some of you dont look at the ad :) edit: also sale on heated waterers, drop in deicers for nipple buckets and such. and heat bulbs and heat lamps

Hey… thanks again for the cost saving tip(s). I will grab a few sacks of BOSS for spring and early summer use. Where do you see the adds? I don't take the local paper, is that where the information is?

RJ
i get the adds in the mail. and i also get them via email. and you can always see them on their website :) glad the info could be of use to someone

Went to town today and grabbed a couple of bags of sunflower seeds (BOSS) and a big bag of meal worms for the seasons chicks to come from Cal Ranch. Saved a cool twenty dollars… best money I made today. I like chicken supplies that can be purchased with… savings! Put my Silver Duckwing OEGB rooster, Sam in one of the pens I have been building, hope to get the other two roosters in their new bachelor pads on the morrow. So, and help me if I am wrong here, it takes two weeks to 'clear out' the hens, so how long after I put them back together should or would I need wait to get fertile eggs again? Mystery chicks are ok from the hatchery, but I want to know the answer to 'Who's Your Daddy' in my own birds.

Looking forward to my first hatch, albeit with some interpretation. Nothing can compare to working experience. And it would seem the experience is often expensive, knowledge does not come for free… but then nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I might be able to have some chicks by the last of February, or the first part of March. I suppose I am guilty of enjoying the excitement of planning and scheming the advent of new chicks.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

I also removed the 'ol ball and chain today. Good times ahead for Sam.

RJ, I usually waited three weeks before collecting eggs to make dead certain that all of the "old goods" were totally cleared out of my ladies' systems. I was slightly paranoid, though, as I was dealing with Icelandics.

Regardless, good luck on your upcoming hatch! How exciting :)

In other news, the chick order went in today (thanks, Ace!) I'm getting Black Jersey Giants! It's the beginning of a new adventure, I hope.
