Utah!

Is there anyone that...isn't...hatching? And, would like some nice barnyard mixes? Bubba's babies. I am getting a lot of girly looking chicks! In both hatches now.
Dad..RIR...hens..so far, brown sexlink/EE mix, .. Red Sex Link..
Coming up with these hens, RIR, sexlink again, Leghorn, and >>>>>>>>silkie!

Can't wait to see what the silkie babies look like. I have 5 in there..I think. All growing! Bubba!

Bubba is still for sale. He is very very much..doing his job. In all ways. He is a good rooster. Dances for the girls. Is gentle while mating. Calls them to food. Too cute to see this. I have a couple of other roosters coming up that I want to work with. A really nice looking Blue Copper Marans from Lisa! One blue OE, that I may not be keeping. He is beautiful! Very pretty blue color. Dark.

Thanks Red for the 'just in case' tip. Got the other two roosters penned and the girls are/were mildly amused. I thought that with the roos gone, the girls would all stand outside and either starve to death or freeze. Surprisingly they seemed to be doing just fine.

I also deployed my bath house, sans paint and a few boards. The birds need was greater than my poor scheduling. Happy birds lay shinny eggs and my basket is a glowing…

Best to all and your birds,

I caught a few of the big girls out in the 'Spa' today. It can hold up to six birds at a time and they seem to just love it. I had to use peat moss, all my dirt is/has been frozen.

But two bales of peat moss, a big scoop of DE, and what wood ash I had been able to save up made the initial installment mix. Whereas my sand pile is also still frozen, I'll try to get some play sand at Lowe's on the morrow. As noted prior, the front is not finished and it needs to be painted white, as I prefer my outbuildings and some shingles on top. The big birds can burrow down far enough that only their head shows above the surface… quite the sight to see.

I am not happy about using it prior to paint, inside and out… but seeing the birds so happy more than make up for it.

Something to consider for your flock, if you have not arrived at a solution for your feathered friends already. I will enclose the front and perhaps put a couple of saloon doors (fixed open) for the proper entrance. I enjoy something fun and whimical for my fowl and myself. As pets go, chickens are just awesome!

The second photograph is where I placed the 'Spa' when it got to cold to paint and or finish up. Should have deployed it then.

Best to all and your birds,

Nice! I love it. By the way, unless something has changed in the past 10 years they wash play sand in a antibacterial solution that may not be so good for chickens guts as I am sure the residue is left on the sand. I usually just get the construction grade base sand as it has more large grain particles for small grit use as well as not having any extra chemicals.

Hey new march… construction grade it is! My first time getting sand from a store, mostly I get it from the pit, or from the bulk landscape places. I always keep a store of it around but I am caught this year with my extra sand in the grandkids frozen over sandpile, which is not going anywhere soon. Thank you for your insight on this… that is very thoughtful of you. The birds and I will both appreciate them not ingesting questionable materials.

Thank you Cynthia, I somehow feel better with the flock having access to a place where they can 'dig' in and roll in the dirt. The base is four feet by four feet. The chain is hooked to two eye bolts so as my lawn mower can tow it to where ever I wish. It was fun to build and the DW wants me to build a little house for the grandchildren to play in. I guess I am ok with that… as long as I can have it for a coop when they tire of it.

RJ, I love how pampered your chickens are :) Nice bath house!

Well I had a dream last night that our order of chicks came in and they were all frozen or hurt and dying :( Stupid brain. I don't know for sure why I have nightmares about things like that. Just worry, I guess?

Lol! Thank you Red. I be loving me some chickens…

So evening last, there was this full moon and looking out my back door I saw it rising through that beautiful stripe of clouds. I wanted to share it with the DW and she snapped this evening view of the moon. From left to right, the banty coop, chicken bus, tractor shed and my big girl coop. The birds each have porch lights, you know, in case of company (like me) and such. During evening lock up, a little light goes a long way…

Stay in, stay warm,
